Salawa Abeni Alidu (born 5 May 1961) is a Nigerian singer.An Ijebu Yoruba from [Ijebu Waterside, in Ogun State, she began her professional career in waka music when she released her debut album titled, Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, in 1976.
Abeni continued recording for Leader until 1986, when she ended a relationship with the record label's owner, Lateef Adepoju. She married Kollington Ayinla and joined his record label instead, staying with him until 1994.
Waka queen, Salawa Abeni, has said that men still pester her for love despite turning 57 recently. The veteran musician told Saturday Beats that she has learnt to treat such men with respect while turning them down.
“I mentioned it in one of my songs that if I laugh too much, they will call me a prostitute, if I frown too much, they will say I am proud. But it is good to be very diplomatic with them and not to be rude to them.”
