RELIGIOUS NEWS: Catholic Pope Visits Ex-Nigerian Prostitutes in Italy

In Italy, prostitution (the exchange of sexual services for money) is legal, but organized prostitution (indoors in brothels or controlled by third parties) is prohibited. Brothels became illegal in 1958. With migration, street
prostitution became more visible, the workers being considered to now be mainly foreigners. Most of the African prostitutes in Italy are Nigerian women.

Pope Francis visited ex- Nigerian prostitutes in Italy yesterday. At the surprise visit in Italy where a Catholic charity is protecting women freed from forced prostitution, the pope met 20 ex-prostitutes from Romania, Albania, Nigeria, Tunisia, Ukraine and Italy, encouraging them to be strong as they start new lives. Seven of the women are from Nigeria.
