India and Pakistan were colonised by Britain. The separate states of
India and Pakistan were created at midnight on August 15, 1947. Yet
while India celebrates that day as its independence day, Pakistan
celebrates its independence day a day before
Mahatma Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
Gandhi's vision of an independent India was based on religious pluralism, however, was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India. Eventually, in August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan.
However, Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948, killed Mahatma Gandhi, shot him three times in the chest at point blank range outside of the Birla House in New Delhi.
Godse thought Gandhi favored the political demands of India's Muslims during the partition of India. He plotted the assassination with Narayan Apte and six others. After a trial that lasted over a year Godse was sentenced to death.

The major blemish bout Ghandi is that he was a rapist and a racist. And those are major

@jesse:
and one thing i like about him is his "PLURALISM". Always wanted to
carry everyone along without marginalising any faction
Jesse Osayande Vucinic Ehiagwina
Endy,
yea. That aspect was top notch. At least he didn't consider any Indian
inferior or any religion to be the best of others. He did try to get
India at the top which I admire. A lot of Indians are racist though. And
no be say them white sef.

@Jesse:
this part of your comment got me lauging "A lot of Indians are racist
though. And no be say them white sef" .... Based on your 1st comment,
do you see Mahatma Gandhi as a Hero or a Villain?
Jesse Osayande Vucinic Ehiagwina
He's
a hero to the world. Everyone has skeletons in their cupboards. I think
a lot of women he raped would consider him a villain and he did
campaign for the apartheid in SA to continue cos he hated blacks. I
don't know where I stand regarding that but he did love his people and
wanted peace.

Will you called a rapist and a racist a hero@Endy?
Endy Edeson
@olajide:
I think rating him as a Hero or Villain is relative or contextial
@Jesse: very nice analysis from you. @Olajide: Jesse nailed it.
Olajide Young Johnson
Well,
you want us to look at him from different angles and perspective but
believe no matter how much more he love peace nor his people still he is
still a racist, a rapist and that makes him a demon in human skin. We
can't erazed off his bad remarks bcos he has made some good remarks
beside devil also gives you goodthings for awhile but the ending is
distrastrous!
