INSIDE LAGOS STATE: If you Buy from Hawkers, You will Pay N90,000 fine or go to Jail in Lagos

This information is very important to residents of Lagos State. Lagosians, please don't patronise hawkers again. It is now an offense to buy things from Hawkers in Lagos. Lagos State government, today July 1,
commenced total enforcement against street trading. Anyone caught hawking or buying from hawkers will pay a fine of N90,000 or 6 months jail term. Both the buyers and sellers are liable. .
The State government came up with this policy after a hawker was crushed to death while selling along the road. Governor Ambode said the new street trade policy will help to stop unnecessary death of hawkers and the crimes they commit.

obnoxious laws... government is supposed to take care of citizens.. not to plan for Jail.. Jail... Jail.. jobs are not provided...all that govt is thinking of is how to collect or extort from citizens....how many prisons are they going to build? all the would end up achieving is as usual.. KAI officials enriching themselves!

Endy Edeson

@enyinda: i think the street hawkers are risking their lives. govt can do everything, those hawkers should station themselves somewhere and sell.

Enyinda Nathaniel Okey

govt is a legal institution.. they can say anything and are covered... but did they provide any alternatives before the THREAT of jail? why must jail be so sweet for them to talk about? would they use the same language in election year?

AL-Fayeed Nick Emele

no job

Endy Edeson

@enyinda: without putting the jail term or monetary fine, many Lagosians will not obey that law.

Princess Akim

Can they gv them job

Bashir Usman Zuntu

Too hard Endy Edeson man must wack nah!

Kingsley Osaghae

no job, no money 2 spend, no food 2 eat, nd now they want 2 chase away hawkers!!! chai! nigeria my country

Bertha Nnaji Steve

This one is hard. Hope there is provision for them to survive?

Jesse Osayande Vucinic Ehiagwina

Hahahahahahaha. What a world.

Lilian Chamberlyn

Useless law. The poor are always used by the rich for their selfish interest. They just want to make people miserable and then create room for armed robbery.

Endy Edeson

@all: why is everyone bent on telling the govt to make provision for them?. The government can't do all things, Nigerians should start thinking on how to be more productive in positive ways

Martins Agbaje

Pls advise them more to always think of LIFE because it got no duplicate.

Martins Agbaje

@ all,pls before you comment, think of THAT fellows life.

Young Agu Esteem

Stealling will increase ooo.

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

@ Endy Edeson, you failed to tell your readers that the hawker was chased to her death by Lagos KAI officials as they made attempts to arrest her and possibly seize her wares. Your report is a deservice to humanity.

Adegbola Sobur Delodun

Bt av witness several time d crime dose hawkers committed in d night and also okada riders they are terrible I didn't said all of them r terror bt govt av 2 do something 2 curtail there activities so dat it 'll reduce d crime
dat some of dem r normally doing

Eze Solomon Emeka

Make I hear say you no buy bottle water for go slow 😀

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

The law is another foolish law by the Lagos state government. The Lagos state government that has been under the control of AD/AC/ACN/APC since 1999 till date has the penchant for making stupid and anti-people laws. The Lagos state government officials should know that the law is made for the man and not the man for the law.

Endy Edeson

@robinson: am not taking sides with the govt or KAI officials but let us be realistic here. the hawkers are aware that what they are doing is against the law, they keep on voilating the rules every day. it is even more dangerious to hawk in traffic than to face KAI officials. There are better ways to make money. People will definitely blame KAI or government if anything happens to a hawker.

Fatusi Jibola Ahmed Amooh

Dats ur thought

Eze Solomon Emeka

And tomorrow somebody will tell me he's fighting against corruption? Damn!

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

@ Endy Edeson, as far as I am concerned, the law is a very bad law and anti people. And I would like to urge the Lagos state government to abrogate it immediately. If the Lagos state government is truely concerned about the welfare and safety of those who hawk in traffic, there are better ways to go about it. How can somebody in his or her right senses just wake up and ban people's means of livelihood without making alternative provision for them simply because he or she is enjoying free money in a government office? It does not make sense. Most laws made by the Lagos state government in this dispensation are bad laws. This is why they find it difficult to enforce them. Imagine telling a hawker to pay a N90,000 fine. Does it make sense?

Jeremiah Ademolu

Even if Lagos government ddnt av mind of bringing this so called harsh law with what happened that very day, they go ahead and deal with whoever break d law.

Adegbite Ade Pepie

@robison,pls visit your frustration on your thieving governors in southeast particularly eboyin state for infrastructural devt for your pple to stay in their region and stop migrating to lagis to cobstitute nuisance on our lagos, nigeria highways and mind you,you are the most stupid biafrat for attacking our govt you didn't vote for

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

First, let me tell you that I am from Delta state in the South South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Second, I would like to tell you that Lagos, by virtue of its status as a former capital city territory of Nigeria, belongs to all Nigerians. Lagos was built by the federal government and by all Nigerians (irrespective of tribe or place of origin) for all Nigerians because of its capital city status. Ambode does not own Lagos more than me or any other Nigerian. Get these facts clear and stop speaking selfishly

Paul Akorita

Robinson don't mind him, blind and selfish people will not see the sense in a meaningful comments. They are just one sided all the time, someone is making a good point and you're there talking about a governor who is corrupt. Tell me one governor who is not corrupt in Nigeria?

Jeremiah Ademolu

They want to do business in another mans land but they don't want to abide by the law. Ordinary gala hawker rub car owner in hold-up at Obalende the day just like drama. I hate the way and manner KAI operate sometimes, but what has that got to do with destroy of BRT???

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

Which land is another man's land? A Nigerian inside Nigeria is in another man's land? Is that the spirit of your own one Nigeria or one nation? Come on, you should stop making divisive statements. Lagos belongs to all Nigerians.

Jeremiah Ademolu

If Lagos belong to all Nigerian why are they destroying what belong to them then???

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

I am against the destruction of the buses. But you should know that it was due to anger because a human life was lost in the most annoying manner due to the overzealousness, foolishness and irresponsibility of the Lagos KAI officials.

Jeremiah Ademolu

Destruction of those buses, yes that's exciatly my point. If is one of those useless KAI officials that's caught by these guys or their truck it wouldn't have pain Lagos state government this much, but they've reacted through their anger and destroyed 48 buses and they did that against innocent people in those buses, so in this same manner let the Lagos state government take action and treat as well. With the way they were throwing stone at those buses on speed that day do you how many people would have died if the one of those bus tumble, BRT bus is for we all, no gender, no religious or tribe, their own bro/sis can be victims in the accidents as well

Ewenyi Solomon O

Oga Endy please stop defending that silly law, in US there are hawkers, and many other civilized nations, even in kenya there is association of hawkers. Apc should STOP adding salt to the injury of the masses in nigeria.

Adegbite Ade Pepie

tell your biafrat robbers to go and hawk in kenya and US traffic, remember to get them visa

Ewenyi Solomon O

Please young man, stop using abusive words in replying my comment; show some maturity.

Coachii Justin Okolie

Ade, its a pity dat at ur age u hav nt aquired any knowledge

Jeremiah Ademolu

You're a FOOLS. Did Lagos state purchase those buses with money from your father Region???

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

Ofcourse, yes. Lagos receives billions of oil money every month as allocations from my father's and mother's region. I am against the destruction of the BRT buses because they are there to serve everybody. But you should be man enough to admit that Lagos receives oil money from the south east and south south every month, @ Jeremiah Ademolu.

Horiloye Hardebunmi

Who told u Lagos is no man's life? We have Oba, Baale in lagos state fo ur information.

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

I said Lagos belongs to all Nigerians. What I said has nothing to do with Oba or baale. The Oba and the baale know that Lagos is a former capital city territory of Nigeria. A capital city of a country belongs to all the citizens of the country. Lagos was built for all Nigerians with resources from all over Nigeria because of its capital city status. The oba and the baale are aware of this.

Jeremiah Ademolu

When Tinubu was the governor of Lagos state under Obasanjo tenured and federal government refused to give allocations to Lagos state for good 6 years, did Lagos flourished without begging from federal then or not? The answer is yes they did, and up till now no state in Nigeria generate internally like Lagos. And if thoroughly the money is from oil and that oil is from your fathers land, why is states in your region are under-develop and shameful position the way they're despite that they're the one receiving the lion share from the oil money, unlike Lagos doing exploits with his own internal generation??? @Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

@ Jeremiah Ademolu, mention one tangible thing done by Tinubu during the period Lagos allocations were withheld by Obasanjo. Again, if the seized allocations were not important or needed by Lagos, why did Lagos go to court because of the seized allocations? One more question for you, have the seized allocations been paid to Lagos or not by the federal government??? The answer is yes, the withheld allocations have been released to the Lagos state government. So, what are you talking about?

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

For your info, the Lagos state government is not doing better than the government of the state, Delta, where I originated from. The Delta state government built and is funding and running more higher institutions than the Lagos state government. Delta state is operating a multi-campus state university with campuses located in Asaba, the state capital, Oleh and Oghara in addition to the main campus located in Abraka. The Delta state government built and is operating four polytechnics with plans to build more. About three colleges of Education, Agbor, Warri and one other, are being
funded by the Delta state government. The Lagos state government is not funding such a number of higher institutions.
There are many other things that the Delta state government has done that the Lagos state government has not done. For instance, the Delta state government has built more sporting facilities than the Lagos state government. In addition, there are two airports in Delta (Warri and Asaba) built with massive state financial impute. How many airports has the Lagos state government built? The airport in Lagos was built by the federal government. And this brings me to the infrastucture in Lagos. 95% of the structures and facilities in Lagos was built by the federal government for the use of all Nigerians because of its capital city status. So, you should stop giving the Lagos state government unmeritted credit.
Considering the massive IGR (internally generated revenue) of Lagos in addition to the massive oil money allocations Lagos receives from Abuja every month, I see the Lagos state government's performance as a flop. With the massive amount of money available to the Lagos state government, the Lagos state government can and should do better.

Bukky Adekoya Oyeyemi

Robinson please with all these your explanation can you please go back to Delta state

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

@ Bukky Adekoya Oyeyemi, you are my friend on facebook. Why are you telling me that? Well, you have no right to tell me that. I am a citizen of Nigeria. For as long as Nigeria remains one country, I have the right to reside anywhere I like in Nigeria. If you want me to go back to Delta state, then you should also tell Lagos to stop receiving oil money allocations gotten from Delta state and other parts of south south and south east. You should also tell Lagos to refund

Jeremiah Ademolu

Whoever is not please with the law better sue Lagos state government.

Bennard Ahupa

The Country is hard stopt making things worst

Bennard Ahupa

Ade or whatever is ur name is lagos ur papa house? If they leave what will do? Nothing but party n eat free food.

Jeremiah Ademolu

@Bennard don't even care wat they name u, i travel a lot, if d government of state or country i am say pple shld b indoors by 7pm i won't stay outside till 6pm. And that's why u alwys hear of excursion of ur pple in those country wia drug tracking is prohibited

Jeremiah Ademolu

@Bennard yes this is my region and my mother is from here. If you guys can't abide by the rule pls leave d state for us. And stop destroying what ten governors/state from your region can not provide for their people in next fifty years here in Lagos. ‪#‎ITESIWAJUEKOLOJEWALOGUN‬

Rose Gloria Olasunkanmi

eko ti ya mad. no better lifes for them, yet u want to ban them. no worry until they come rob U. that's when u know what they r facing. in my area we sleep in fear because of theif

Coachii Justin Okolie

Lagos state gvnt ar just silly to say dat, wht abt d area boys dat are evrywhr in lagos road restricting traffic, dey wl nt ban dem jst becos dy gv dem little return...wcked generation!

Paul Akorita

As little as his mind, so he speaks. Make ona leave Ade.

Amos Roboudu Apeikhena

Lagos is a mega city. I believe there should be a better way of handling this issue than putting a total stop to it. What are are plans of the government for this hawkers. In what ways are the government planning to make this people important to the society. 1 child that is wrongly influenced is a terror to the whole nation. A child that is also tutored is an asset to a country at large, let us not throw away the baby with the dirty water.

Robinson Emeke Ikebueze

Some people could be so daft, selfish and funny. They are quick to tell their fellow Nigerians to leave Lagos, a city that belongs to all Nigerians. But they want the same Lagos to continue to partake in the sharing of oil money gotten from the regions where those they are telling to leave Lagos originated from! Is this not the height of stupidity and provocation. The fools and selfish elements telling their fellow Nigerians to leave Lagos should watch their tongues.

Jeremiah Ademolu

@Amos your comments really make sense, but with the way those guys destroy those buses and injured innocent passengers in them, why won't Lagos state bring such law against them.

Yisa Azeez Eleniyo

Lagos state government is totally going out of control..i wish I can see dat governor in person and tell him what he needs to hear..anyway I don't blame them all cos they ve never tasted the kind of life we masses are living...Hawking has been in lagos since the birth of lagos and now some rich animals who spent most of their times abroad and flew back here to impose their selves as govenor will now come and make dirty laws..put them in prison, but be very certain their is one life prison u and I won't escape..fucking goverment.for dis kind hardship.

Ann Ab

Them d crazy, where work? Infact i will join them

Ezeji Nnecky Chidinma

Na person means of livelihood be this oo.bcuz you dey enjoy govt money no mean say poor man no go find food chop again

Adesuyi Olukayode

LAGOS STATE IS NOT THE ONLY STATE RECEIVING OIL MONEY ,LET OTHER STATE ULTILISED THEIR MONEY TOO SO THAT UNEMPLOYMENT CAN REDUCED IN NIGERIA.

Michael Scofield

No. This is wrong, did you want them to start stealing. Did Govr think this people re happy doing dis job. Nigeria pls dnt allow this to happen.
