Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the ongoing
sexual Harassment Offences Bill, in the Senate, saying the bill was
targeted at lecturers. ASUU President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi , during a
public hearing on the bill asked the Senate in particular and the National Assembly, in general not to allow the bill have its way, added that the bill is vindictive and it undermines university autonomy.
Professor Ogunyemi said their is an existing law that prescribed punishments over misconduct generally among both staff and students, clearly articulating appropriate redress mechanism. He also noted that sexual harassment was a societal problem and not peculiar to tertiary institutions and so tertiary institutions should not be singled out for such law.
It would be recalled that the bill for a law which prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who engage in sexual relationship with students has passed its first reading
QUESTIONS:
1. Do you support ASUU on this Matter?
2. Does ‘Sexual Harassment Bill’ Undermine University Autonomy?

Policies
are usually initiated by one person. Others buy into d idea and it
becomes a document. The making of a policy document requires d inputs of
major stakeholders. Did Senate involve ASUU? Or..one Senator's
girlfriend or daughter was sexually harassed and it is being
politicized? There is more we may not yet know about this!

@enyinda:
that's the point. ASUU is making a point. sexual harrassment is a
societal problem. if such a law should be passed let it include both
governmental bodies and other agencies. it shouldn't be restricted to
one institution

I
support the Senate to pass the bill,Bcos most of the lecturer practices
this in the higher institutions. Even the way this offence is been
handle in the school by the sch Senate committee called panel is not
encouraging.if any student write them on any issue pertaining to this
matter the student may not graduate for years.bu
t if our senate can grant this bill it will curb bad habit and also reduce cultism in schools

The
bill is good but the question is will the Senate later make sexual
harassment law to other agencies of the country (eg force) if similar
complains are traceable to them. Why not expanding the law now that
you're making it?

If
they can't extend it, they should better sleep on it. Cause it seems
the the government is only interested in balls in their court alone.
