TODAY in HISTORY: May 7, 2012 Vladimir Putin Became Russian President for the Third Time

Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for second tenure during 2008 election, the winner of the presidential election Dmitry Medvedev appointed Putin Prime Minister.

On this day May 7, 2000, Vladimir Putin was inaugurated as the president of Russia for the first time. He has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2000. His first term in office as president lasted from 2000 to 2004, his second tenure lasted from 2004 to 2008.

In September 2011, after presidential terms were extended from four to six years, Putin announced he would seek a third term as president. He won the March 2012 presidential election with 64% of the votes.

He was Time Magazine's Person of the Year, and in 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2015, he was placed on its 100 Most Influential People in the World list. Putin studied law at the Leningrad State University in 1970, and graduated in 1975.

Putin is a great man. A man that knows his history. He remembers how great the Soviet Union was and has made Russia bigger than they ever were after some terrible Presidents before him. He's stabled the country, made them a force internationally, respect has grown and Russians are generally prouder than before.
