It is on record that Tunji Braithwaite died on Monday March 28, 2016 at the age of 82 and was buried today April 28, 2016. Who is Tunji Braithwaite? He was a famous Nigerian lawyer, human rights activist and a politician. He formed ‘Nigeria Advance Party’ on 13 October 1978 in Ibadan Oyo State during Nigeria second republic, contested for a presidential position in 1983 elections but lost the election to Shehu Shagari. His party Nigeria Advance Party (NAP), was the only one registered by the electoral commission
to join the five existing ones approved by the military government in 1979. Professor Wole Soyinka was a an ally of his party. Unfortunately, on 7 December 2012, His party was one of 28 to be de-registered by INEC, ahead of 2015 election campaign.
Tunji Braithwait was born in 1933 in Lagos State. He studied Law at Council of Legal Education in London in 1958. .He was called to the Bar in 1961 at Lincoln’s Inn before returning to Nigeria.
He came into limelight in 1977 when he represented Fela Kuti’s family to get Fela out of prison and redress human rights abuse by the Olusegun Obasanjo-led military government.
He set up T.A. Braithwaite (Insurance Brokers) & Co. Ltd. in April 1958, the first indigenous insurance broking company in Nigeria. He married his childhood lover, Grace in 1956 and they had five children and many grandchildren
