(Click Here to Read my LIVE Report at Balogun Market Lagos) Fela Shrine is a popular entertainment spot in Lagos. It is
located at Agindingbi, Ikeja Lagos State.
The Shrine was founded in the 1970’s. After the release of the album,
ZOMBIE by Fela in 1977, Nigerian government was infuriated by the criticisms
the songs connoted, Fela exposed the evils of the military government on
Nigerians and the then Head of States Olusegun Obasanjo wasn’t happy about it.
Obasanjo ordered the beaten of Fela, his mother was thrown out from window
which led to her death and
Fela Shrine was burnt down.
The New Afrika Shrine was rebuilt by Fela’s children Femi
and Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti. Aside the live music, the shrine also provides other
services. You can eat here, take out and delivery. It’s a rugged spot to chill
out on weekends and weekdays. Femi,
Fela’s son usually performs at the Shrine and an annual music event in honour
of Fela tagged “Felabration” is held at the Shrine.
I visited the Shrine in 2015.
