Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is a mental disorder that causes periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood. During periods of depression, there may be crying, a negative outlook on life, and poor eye contact with others. The risk of suicide among those with the illness is high at greater than 6 percent over 20 years, while self-harm occurs in 30–40 percent.
Mariah Carey has spoken for the first time about her 17-year battle with bipolar disorder. The singer told People she was first diagnosed with the condition in 2001 after a mental breakdown which resulted in her being admitted to hospital.
"Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me," she explained.
"It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love - writing songs and making music." Carey said.
she is now having therapy and taking medication for bipolar disorder, which has caused her to have periods of depression and hypomania, which can cause irritability and insomnia.

Olumuyiwa; Why is she scaring you? Depression is part of life but it is up to us to handle it without breaking down completely @Yemisi, of course they do. Most of the famous people live a lonely life

I write my songs too and sing and sometimes in that process i seem out of sync with the people around me. I just pray........

@Olumuyiwa; I think it's beyond music, it's rather a personal struggle. Sometimes, our strength lies in our passion. From your profile, I can sense you are an inspirational or gospel singer. Am I right?

Many of de irrational attitude we see in people in naija are symptoms of Bipolar disorder..but we so much believe dat everything odd is caused by de devil, so instead of going to a rehabilitation centre/ hospital we rush to church and from one to anoda church to anoda church, unto say dem say de Pastors get power.. b4 u know it years has gone by and de madness still dey upgrade.
You see people chained, flogged in church..I mean people suffering from depression. Wouldn't dis church condition worsen de brain heat?
Naija! We need more knowledge on spiritual and non~spiritual things.

@Poi: Well said. Most folks in Nigeria and Africa don't know anything about depression . Rehab is far better than spiritual cleansing in fighting depression

My best way of handling depression is always quoting Matthew 11 : 28 - 30; throwing the hefty load of the heavy emotional burden on him; drinking a lot of water; drinking ginger water; just going to an open field for sight seeing; and sleeping deep.
Amidst all of these, tears do always gutter down my cheeks and I let it out with just a deep-throated, high pitch song accompanied with cry; most of my messages topics, unreleased, hot, and soul-lifting gospel singles are always delivered when I am depressed.
Pointedly, if you have never been through depression as a Nigerian, check your identity again; you might be a circumstancial Nigerian from Sudan: depression is a Nigeria-origina ted disorder, my humourous opinion though.

@John: Yeah, bad leadership and lack of emotional support can lead to depression . It is normal to be depressed regardless of one's status in the society but DEPRESSION is ABNORMAL which should be cured or managed

Saddening , its understandable though. Uneasy they say lies the head that wear the crown.
