A Brief History Of Heineken, Family Business Since 1864

Heineken is one of the global leading brewers. The company is headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and spreads its business all over the world. The Heineken story began more than 140 years ago in 1864 when young Gerard Adriaan Heineken acquired a small brewery in the heart of Amsterdam.
Since then, four generations of the Heineken family have expanded the Heineken brand and the Company throughout Europe and the rest of the world. It is a family business.

The founder, Gerard Adriaan Heineken acquired money from his wealthy mother in order to purchase and renovate an old brewery in the center of Amsterdam. A few years after this decisive procurement, the brewery began to produce beer, which was stamped with its creator’s family name – leading to the first batch of Heineken lager.

Heineken's leading brand portfolio includes more than 170 international premium, regional, local and specialty beers. The Heineken brand is available in almost every country on the planet. Heineken is a sponsor of the UEFA Champions League. At the beginning and during a football match their name is on billboards on the sides of the field. Their name is also mentioned before the match begins, for example: this match is sponsored by Heineken.
