Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Al-Makura, spoke on Thursday of a successful operation carried out on his hip at a hospital in Newcastle, United Kingdom, and how he is now undergoing physiotherapy that would bring about complete healing.

The Governor spoke to newsmen on the reason for his recent trip abroad at his private residence in Lafia, the state capital.

He also alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in the state, Yunana Iliya, was among those that have collected money for various projects in the state and abandoned the jobs.

Al-Makura had travelled abroad about three weeks ago where he had a surgery on his right hip.

He explained that he was earlier diagnosed of arthritis but that it was subsequently discovered the ailment was actually not arthritis.

He said the ailment that worried him had affected the socket on his right hip, which, he added, necessitated the operation.

Meanwhile, Taraba State Governor, Ibrahim Suntai, who was involved in an air crash late 2012 is still in a German hospital recovering from the serious injuries he sustained.

Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, is also believed to be ill and in a foreign hospital which the state government has refused to disclose.

His counterpart in Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, is also recuperating from an undisclosed ailment in a hospital in the United States of America.

Towards the end of last year, Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, was also involved in a ghastly auto accident.

He sustained serious injuries but he has been discharged from an Abuja hospital and now recuperating in a private residence.

On PDP, Al-Makura alleged that Iliya was one of those that ripped the state government off by collecting various sums of money during the administration of Aliyu Akwe Doma and later abandoned the projects.

Among the projects Al-Makura alleged that the PDP chairman collected money for but did not complete are the multi-billion naira 500 housing estate along Lafia-Doma road and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Lafia.

Al-Makura lamented the shoddy nature of work that was carried out at the school of nursing by Iliya even when he did not complete the work.

He also said since the PDP chairman had collected money to carry out work on some sections of the 500 housing estate during the last administration but failed to complete it, he (Iliya) does not have the moral high ground to speak on accountability in the state.

“He is not the right person to talk of accountability… it is too late for him to stand on the pulpit and begin to preach on accountability,” Al-Makura said.

The Governor also dispelled the rumour that Nasarawa State was broke, saying to the contrary it was very buoyant and could take care of the emoluments of workers as well as other sundry issues.

But he was quick to state that the Federal Allocation to the state was not enough for him to pay workers and also make the impact he wishes by providing basic needs and services to the people, because according to him, he did not assume leadership in the state to be a “pay master”.

“I want to dispel the rumour that Nasarawa State is poor; we are not poor, but I did not aspire to power to be a pay master.”

He noted that otherwise he would fold his hands and wait for the next allocation after paying salaries each month.

Al-Makura, who also reacted to the statement credited to Iliya that he (Al-Makura) should resign over his hearing impairment or face impeachment by the state House of Assembly, said he was disappointed that someone so high in society would make such remarks on disability.

While describing the statement as “immoral, inhuman and ungodly”, Al-Makura said the PDP chairman may have made the comment for lack of something tangible to say.
