Outcry As Nigeria Banks Shun .NG Domain Names

Money deposit banks are still reluctant to register their domains on . ng , Nigeria ’ s Code Top Level Domain ( ccTLD ) , preferring instead foreign domains, despite several years of lobbying and campaigns by Nigeria Internet Registration Association ( NIRA )
the custodian of Nigeria ’ s ccTLD .
As at today , only Fidelity bank has identified with the country’ s identity on the cyber space, according to Edith Udeagu , chief operating officer , NIRA .
She told Nigeria CommunicationsWeek that the situation is not good for the country’ s identity on the cyber space where organizations identify with their parent country’ s domain name such as . uk for United Kingdom banks and . za for South African banks.
“ Banks that register their website on . com or other foreign domain don’ t have control over them because; it is not under our jurisdiction . You don’ t have easy access to the regulator if there is any issue such as cloning of website among others .

What needs to happen is gradual migration to . ng in such a way that there won ’ t be disruption of their services . They can set another website on . ng and redirecting visitors of their previous website to the . ng website

Sanctions can be leveled on them if they don't corporate.

@Evans: It is not compulsory except if the lawmakers enacts laws that will sanction banks and other corporate bodies from using foreign domain extensions

@Goodie & Obanla; Banks don't want to spend money to migrate there website to .ng platforms . It could be because of the bad imaging most Nigerians have online in the western world that is why but banks and other corporate bodies should be the first to migrate. though, using .com is kind of safer

Aruoture Goodie

Already customers r shouting dat websites are not working, this, that... We r knw d Nigerian situation... Hmmm... There might be more havoc...

@Goodie: Hahahahahaha. Funny you Goodie. So, are you saying that NIRA can't handle Corporate domains? Remember, NIRA is backed by the Americans and Western intellects. So, it's not as if they are using their "brain" completely to run the platform

Let cooperation join.. You'll see wat I'm talking abt

The banks are only there to the people blind and never to support anything. If they hear that migrating to such will give them N20B, fiaaaam! Dem go just do am. Very selfish set of business people!

Endy Edeson

@Creo; Exactly, you are 100% right. The migrating will cost then a lot , it won't add anything to their revenue. The only way NIRA will achieve this is to write to National Assembly to enact a law regarding it.
