Ghana's Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has announced a ban on the import of “all ornamental fishes and tilapia species”. The ban on the importation of all tilapia fish is to prevent the outbreak of a virus which posed a huge risk to the global tilapia industry.
The ban, which applies to both live and dead fish, as well as eggs and milt follows reports of cases of tilapia lake virus in various parts of Africa, Asia and South America. It will be effective from 1 July to 31 December.
The Tilapia Lake Virus (TILV) has no cure, and has been found in Tilapia farms across Africa, Asia and South America. There are a few Tilapia farms in Ghana, but the farming is done on a small scale. Tilapia is a popular dish in Ghana, and is often served with a fermented corn and cassava dough called Banku.
Similarly, early this year, Nigeria govt initiated a ban on the importation of fish in
a bid to boost local production of fish..

Wow! That's great. So, you plan to export cat fish to other countries or you just want to do local production and sales?
Isiaq Zakariyah
Even if Nigerians always complain of our President's policies, the policy of banning importation to encourage local producers is a very good one. But many of us who are lazy will say, he should not ban until when local production is in abundance. Is it not demand that will call for more production?

Well said Isiaq, though, the banning shouldn't be all species of fish
