Pregnant New Zealand Prime Minister To Take Six Weeks Maternity Leave

New Zealand — A verdant island nation at the bottom of the world — one of America's closest allies — may have something to teach the U.S. about the role of women in public life. Women in New Zealand could vote two decades before American women, the country is on its third female prime minister — and now the current officeholder,
an unmarried 37-year-old named Jacinda Ardern, is about to give birth.
In June, Ardern, the world's youngest female leader, will become just the second woman in history to give birth while an elected head of state. She'll become the first elected leader ever to take maternity leave.
"I don't want to ever give the impression that I'm some kind of wonder woman," said Ardern, an unpretentious wunderkind with an ever-ready smile. "Or that women should be expected to do everything because I am. I'm not doing everything."
She'll have help with childcare from the baby's father, Clarke Gayford, her partner of four years. Gayford, host of a popular fishing show called Fish of the Day, is planning to be a stay-at-home dad. The couple's unwed status, she said, was not a "deliberate decision."
Ardern, whose centre - left government won office late last year, will be the first New Zealand leader to give birth while in office , and only the second in the world .
Pakistan’ s former prime minister Benazir Bhutto had her second child while in office in 1990 but resumed work almost immediately. Ardern, 37, said she will continue working as close as possible to her due date of June 17 and then hand over power to her deputy Winston Peters.
As acting prime minister Peters will look after the day -to - day running of government , although Ardern said she will be consulted on significant issues.

Akintoye Adebareh Abdul Akeem

Her country don't have any problem, if there is Fulani killers or bokoharam she won't have time to get pregnant self.

Endy Edeson

Seriously Akeem, I don't understand your comment. Can you rephrase it?

Daniel Orji

With what I have heard Nigerian political office holders (president precisely) go through while in the office, am racking my brain to fathom the time they have for bed pleasure....lol#maybe it's a different experience in new Zealand, just thinking oo

@Daniel: Hahahahahaha. You think our current president don't do at least 5 times in a month? Just joking. Sex, Family and Career should be giving equal attention

Niyeck Nandack

A single lady becoming a leader in Nigeria? People will quote bible and Koran. Michel Bachelet who just completed her second term in office as president of Chili is very brilliant and popular . Yet, during the campaign, she said she did not know whether God exists but she was still voted for because of her competence and capacity.

@Niyeck: The problem in Nigeria and other African countries is that they attach lots of "USELESS DOCTRINES" in affairs of life. In the Western world, no much rules, neutrality is key....

Daniel Orji

Haha...5 times kwa, our dear presido am not sure he thinks of that often! On a more serious note, family should be given priority against anything else....after all that's the whole essence of the hustling, and to a large extent it have a way of impacting on the society when we don't pay attention to the family!!!

Agunsoye Ewaoluwa Keren

Nice job. I love the fact that she is a woman and pregnant and can still run the government I wish we can all in this world get there even in Nigeria too

Oluwaseun King Sofoluwe

Well, women have been handed the responsibility of child bearing by nature. It should be respected and factored into any facet of our existence as human beings. It's good to know that she isn't been destroyed by silly minds for this. Allowed to do what she knows alongside her nature responsibility... Deserves some accolades.
