Breakups are tough. Sometimes you have to go on a spontaneous vacation. Or move to a new apartment. Or get a dog. Or, if you’re Mariah Carey, secretly sell your giant, 35-carat diamond engagement ring for a cool $2 million.
The ring, which is reportedly worth around $10 million, was part of the settlement agreed upon by Carey and Australian tycoon James Packer after they split up in 2017. According to Page Six, Carey quietly sold her engagement ring to a unnamed Los Angeles jeweler for $2.1 million, which is quite a way to get rid of some unwanted baggage. “Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity,” her publicist told Page Six. “That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend.”
A source added that a confidentiality agreement was signed to keep the jeweler from revealing the identity of the ring’s original owner. “The jeweler is currently selling it, and there’s only one such ring. Mariah Carey’s public-relations people are desperately trying to keep the story from the press, and have threatened the jeweler with litigation if he discloses her name.”
Another source “scoffed” at the prospect that Carey had sold it because she was in need of money. “She owns multiple homes, her entire catalog of music, and she’s had numerous successful tours and residencies.”
