Biography of Walter Onnoghen The New Chief Justice Of Nigeria

Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen simply known as Walter Onnoghen was born on 22 December 1950 in Cross Rivers State. He had been the Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2005 before his recent
appointment as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Ghana at Legon, Ghana in 1977 and from the Nigerian Law School in Lagos in 1978. Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a judge in Cross River State and a justice of the Court of Appeal.

After being nominated as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria by the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, he was confirmed by the Senate today, 1st March, 2017.

As a judge, he made history with lots of judgements. Onnoghen upheld the death sentence meted out to Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, known as “Rev. King”, the general overseer of Christian Praying Assembly, who was accused of murdering a member of his church in 2006.

He annulled Yar’Adua’s election in December 2008 and called for a fresh one, after the then Gen. Buhari argued that the election was rigged.
Furthermore, he made a landmark pronouncement in the case of two Igbo women, Gladys Ada Ukeje and Maria Nweke, who argued that they should have equal access as men to the inheritance of their parents. In Igbo culture, women had been disinherited for ages as a result of tradition.
Congrats to him.

thank you my brother. I like news of "success stories" which requires one to take action or responsibilities. Onnoghen deserves the appointment based on his positive antecedents. Happy New Month. @Okey
