Kalakuta Republic now "Fela Shrine" was founded in the 1970’s.
After the release of the album, ZOMBIE by Fela in 1977, Nigerian
government was infuriated by the criticisms the songs connoted. Fela
exposed the
evils of the military government on Nigerians and the then
Head of States Olusegun Obasanjo wasn’t happy about it. Obasanjo ordered
the beating of Fela, his mother, Olufunmilayo Ransome- Kuti was thrown
out from window which led to her death and Fela Shrine (Kalatuta
Republic) was burnt down.
It was on this day, February 18, 1977, 40 years ago, that this ugly incident happened.
