Tomorrow is the last Saturday in the month of November 2016 and it's
the first last Saturday of the month to officially witness free
movement of people without restriction due to monthly sanitation
exercise. As a
freelancer, I do have lots of engagements with my clients and prospects on Saturday mornings but the monthly sanitation exercise in Lagos disrupts most of my plans due to the restriction of movement by the government.
I was over the moon on Wednesday when I heard the good news that monthly sanitation exercise in Lagos has been officially cancelled by the government after appeal court ruling by Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu nullified it.
The suit was brought before the court by a citizen, Faith Okafor (Appellant) against the Lagos State Government (Respondent).
Justice Ogakwu stated that in the absence of a written law prescribing the same, the Governor’s directive for people in Lagos State to stay at home and not to move about thereby restricting movement of persons in Lagos State within the hours of 7.00am to 10.00am on the last Saturday of every month was unlawful, illegal and unconstitutiona l.
In line with Appeal Court ruling, the Lagos State Government stated that considering the present economic situation in the country, it was no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.
