EDUCATION / UNIVERSITY LIFESTYLE: Layman's View Of Mass Communication As a Course

Mass communication is the study of how people and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. Mass media includes newspaper, magazine, book, radio,
television , film, even via internet. Mass communication differs from the studies of other forms of communication, such as interpersonal communication or organizational communication.

Mass Communication is a course related to communication, which you can either pursue at graduation level or post graduation level. It comprises six-core subjects- Journalism, Video Production, Audio Production, Advertising, Event Management and Public Relations. Mass Communication is an exhaustive course where you get to learn so much. Unlike popular belief that Mass Communication is a course which helps you work in the media especially electronic media, this course is not just about it. Essentially studying Mass Communication entails knowing about all the aspects of communicating.

Sometimes Mass Communication graduates tend to switch lines by taking up something else instead of any core area of Mass Communication. An increasing number chooses to do MBA in marketing.
These days, people especially young youths, do see this course as a passage through which they can have the taste of social activities/¬live; some of them do call it "A FEMALE COURSE".

In Nigeria universities, there are large number of female students than male students in Mass Communication department. Most of the female students in mass communication are there just for the fun, while few percent of them are there for the real thing.

Some universities now see the course as a substitute, what I mean is, a student who choose law in jamb but was unable to get the cut off mark of law, the school sends the student to mass communication department.
Some students have erroneous believe that Mass Communication is a simple course to study, unlike Engineering or Science courses.

A report by Mr. Kelly Murphy, a graduate of Enugu State University of science And Technology Enugu Nigeria (Esutech), revealed that most graduating students from mass communication at Abia State Polytechnic, are the ones passing out with the highest percentage of poor results. This implies that no course is simple, students should get their priorities right in choosing a course of study in the university.

I had a feeling some courses were 'simpler' than others. By d time I got into d university.. I discovered I was wrong. Each is as tough or as easy as the other

Kelly Murphy

As a communicator i am i can defend my course mass communication anywhere ,anytime I'm sorry for those who are there for ferry fun

Endy Edeson

@Priceless, do you now work in a media platform or you choose another career after graduation? @Enyinda: I am aware you studied Engineering Technology at University of new brunswick, canada. ENGINEERING COURSES is perceived to be the hardest. It means you are really passionate about the course and with hardwork, you passed out with flying colours. There is no need of asking you if you love Mathematics or Calculation.

Enyinda Nathaniel Okey

Before I went to New Brunswick University in Canada I had my first Master's degree in US. I had Engineering Major and Management/Administration Minor. I understand this post well. Some of us pose that our courses are tougher than what others did. Wayo talk!. Remember Endy...I had my O'Levels in Maths..AddMaths. Physics... And later A'level without attending one secondary school! I guess it's about how u apply ur mind!!!
