In a new year message, Paul Kagame made it known to Rwandans that he
will seek re-election for third tenure in 2017. His decision is line
with Rwanda's constitution which allows 3rd term after a referendum
approved the constitutional changes in 2015. December 2015 referendum result allows Mr Kagame for a third seven-year term in 2017 and then two further five-year terms.
Paul Kagame is the sixth and current President of Rwanda. He commanded the rebel force that ended the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. He was considered Rwanda's de facto leader when he served as Vice President and Minister of Defence from 1994 to 2000.
