Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, has said that its government
will merge the College of Agriculture in Yandev with the Benue State
University, Makurdi, for proper funding and management. The governor
stated this in Abuja during a courtesy call on the Executive Secretary
of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, to solicit
for financial support for the study of agriculture in the state. According to him, resources in the state were thinly spread among the
existing tertiary institutions and cannot support the desire for quality
research and development, particularly in the area of agriculture.
Ortom, therefore, appealed to TETFund management to “provide special
assistance to the state, in order to establish a strong Faculty of
Agriculture in Benue State University following the planned merger.”
He said his administration had made the development of agriculture a
priority and would do everything possible to support its study from
primary to tertiary levels in the state.
The governor lamented the
high level of graduate unemployment in the state, but he observed that
if the agric potential was well harnessed, massive employment
opportunities would be created for the youth.
While commending
TETFund for intervention in the Benue State University, two colleges of
education and a polytechnic, Ortom added, “If TETFund projects were
removed from the institutions, nothing will remain.”
In his response, Bogoro said TETFund had been conscious of what to do to strengthen tertiary institutions in the country.

this
does not make any sense. The statute establishing each institution is
clear. Benu state is rich in agriculture. the college of agriculture is
to help develop the agriculture of the state. some states have more than
two universities and doing well. I wont understand why the governors of
a great state like Benue cannot be proactive in administration. Even private individuals are establishing private secondary schools and universities. Whatever is wrong in Benue state!
