CURRENT AFFAIRS: Christians React as Kano State Extends Monthly Sanitation Day to Sundays

The Kano State Government on Saturday announced the extension of its monthly environmental sanitation to Sunday. The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ali Makoda, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday, shortly after monitoring exercise for the month of June. Makoda said the population of Kano, in addition to the rainy season, made it necessary for the extension to enable people to properly clean their surroundings and drainage. The commissioner commended the people of the state for their level of compliance during the exercise and implored them to continue with the attitude. He, however, restated the new administration’s desire to ensure a cleaner and a healthier environment, adding that this would only be achieved with the support of the citizenry.

He said his ministry would liaise with some local government councils on how to improve sanitation in their areas.

The commissioner visited all the metropolitan Local Government Areas in Kano, including Ungogo Local government Area. NAN reports that there was no arrest with regards to non- compliance to exercise for the month of June.
However, the move was not welcomed by some Christians living in the State as it coincides with Sunday morning services.
According to ELEO on a popular Nigerian Online forum:
“ Christians go to church on Sundays or does Kano State think there are no Christians in the state? If there is no ulterior motive behind choosing Sundays (as they would claim) then the exercise can as well begin from Friday afternoon till Sunday. I mean, there is no religious motive behind it, it's all for a cleaner environment so there should be no problem at all.In fact, the State will be much cleaner if 3 days are dedicated to sanitation. Not so? “

bad idea! buh I won't say it wrong, bcos in South east you xtian don't give we muslim chance to build mosque let alone to have congregation. Atleast u have uncountable churches in the North. You can say am a muslim, buh I can vividly remember wen I went to Imo state and it was really terrible bcos I couldn't find a single mosque in that area. and my brother said the landlord had forbidden themfrom observinG salat in his house.
