EDUCATION: President Jonathan Approves 2 New Universities, "Edwin Clark University & Hezekiah University"

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the establishment of two new private universities in the country. The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the council, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. One of the new universities is Edwin Clark University located in Kiagbodo, Delta State. The university belongs to Chief Edwin Clark, an Ijaw leader and major supporter of the President. Clark was also a former Federal Commissioner of Information in the First Republic.

The Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, announced the approval for the new universities during the post-FEC press conference in Abuja.

Akwashiki also named Hezekiah University, located in Umudi, Imo State, as the second private university approved by the council. She said, “The Minister of Education tabled a memorandum to seek the council’s ratification of the President’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional licence for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.

“The establishment of Edwin Clark University will address the inadequate access to university education and enrolment of students in excess of the carrying capacity of the universities. “In addition, the establishment of the university will also address the development challenges of the Niger Delta in particular and also the wider global community as a whole.

“After deliberations, the council ratified the President’s anticipatory approval for the issuance of provisional licence for the establishment of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.”

The council had during its February 25 meeting approved nine additional private universities for the country. The nine universities approved at that February meeting were Augustine University, Ilara, Lagos State; Chrisland University, Owode, Ogun State; Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State; Hallmark University, Ijebu Itele, Ogun State; Kings University, Ode Omu, Osun State; Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Orode, Delta State; Mountain Top University, Ogun State; Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State; and Summit University, Offa, Kwara State.

Azeez Adekoya Falcon

well is good for rich. but am still concern for the common man who can not even pay for public university let alone private

Aruoture Goodie

Dat shit irritates me, wen some boring kids shout poor cnt even afford... Wen cnt D 'so called poor' work hard to gain scholarships? + u peeps keep shouting private schools are schools for D rich.. Do u fucking know D running cost of a primary school, let alone University... Do u even know D meaning of subsidy? All public owned schools enjoy dat, from ur cleaner to ur VC, dey all get deir pays from govt... But private schools try to keep up, then we hear dey are outrageously expensive and all dat shit... Own a company nd Start paying tax, U'd know wassup..

Azeez Adekoya Falcon

@Aruoture wat is ur write up really up to. bcos u talk as if u own a large oil company

Aruoture Goodie

Lol, aspiring to own 1 some day... But D thing is if more schools come in place, Nigeria will b a better place... Since govt isn't ready yet, private individuals have to take it up, being dat dey are not under govt, yet still gotta live up to standard, D running cost would b high, so is D school fees... Or would u wna b a lecturer nd b collecting 50k monthly wen ur mates collect about 300k?

Aruoture Goodie

Dese are some of D reasons for D outrageous amounts paid... Every school wna own labs fully equipped... So wen private schools call out deir prices, dnt criticise, think well, analyse D price worth nd appreciate, afta it's not compulsory to go there befor

Azeez Adekoya Falcon

U are right! I didn't say creation of private skul is nt a better idea. All d blame shld on our leaders, I laughed wen u talk abt scholarship. Maybe u are lucky to have one. This a country where best student fAil and poor student pass

Aruoture Goodie

Lol... The schools created in D North nko? How many gree go, D thing is D drive to go to school dis day is low

Azeez Adekoya Falcon

funny so u xpect me to skul in North during dis Boko Haram era. even my broda was student in unimaid before he harfly get transfered to ilorin. I tink wat we nids to tackle in Nigeria is beyond all this

Aruoture Goodie
