CURRENT AFFAIRS: Shocking Reasons Why BUHARI Banned AIT from Covering His Activities

Security officials attached to Muhammadu Buhari have barred African Independent Television (AIT) from covering the functions of the president-elect till further notice. Buhari Clamps Down On AIT. The security team according to Punch cited security reports and ethical issues as reasons for their action. The directive which took effect on Monday, April 27, was enforced when members of AIT crew, who were at the Defence House to cover of a meeting between Buhari and a visiting Cuban delegation, were asked to leave.

Confirming this to Punch, the crew said: Yes, we were told but we cannot just leave; we have a job to do. In any case, we have not been officially informed about what we have done wrong.

On why AIT was restricted from covering functions of the president-elect, Mallam Garba Sheh, the director of press of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, noted that security concerns informed the decision.
He said: “AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, General Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.

“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter but for now, the station has been asked to stay aside because, like I said, there are some family and security concerns.
“They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards.”

In weeks building up the presidential election, AIT was criticized for airing a documentary, “The Real Buhari” which x-rayed the retired general’s past military regime as one that become the first to sentence a woman to death by firing squad.

The documentary was described by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a“fabricated and hate broadcast” against its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) also indicted the African Independent Television (AIT) and the National Television Authority (NTA) for the airing several documentaries which maligned the image of Muhammadu Buhari.

Change has started, AIT, accept to learn and broadcast real true documentries not fabricated.

Endy Edeson

@all: without taking sides. BUHARI positioned himself as PURE, any allegation brought against him is fabricated. but we all know that his life and that of our past & present leaders are OPEN BOOKS. Though, seriously, AIT voilated journalism ethics with their documentaries but there is no smoke without fire.

Sonia Patrick

Its AIT today. Who knows what's next. ‪#‎allfingerscrossed‬

Oluyemi Omonayajo

Though one expect More maturity on the part of the president elect but we know that AIT s report during the campaign was one sided

Sule Beeti Snow Audu

Good for AIT. Let follow GEJ otuoke to cover his activities.

Nwankwo Perfectblend Uzoma

But AIT fuck up!

Mercy Dan

time will tell. GEJ was so gentle to everybody by openin his doors wider for all to an extent no in4 was secret anymore. let's wait for change nau, small time u'll not be posting here again or write any coment. let me go and reenforce my roof o b4 the wind of wicked change start blowing.

Jesse Osayande Vucinic Ehiagwina

Let's be clear. All professions have ethics. And AIT violated those ethics. Like it or not, there has to be some sort of a middle ground. You don broadcast messages without proper verification even if you're being paid to do so. Before people see this as being malicious or vindictive, look at the other side of the coin. Did AIT adhere to the ethics of their commission? NO. Are they suppose to pay for breaching the conduct? YES. It happens everywhere in the world when people break professional ethics. That's documentary was not verified and it was downright malicious with the intention to hurt. There was no reporting being done there. Just downright attacks.

Rhoda Maji Yerima

Good for them!!! They never knew he'l win that was why they did all that rubbish. GEJ come and save ait biko....lol.

Sonia Patrick

It only starts with AIT, believe u me in no time other channels will follow. Then you and I will always mind wht we put on or update our status wit. If they can do this to AIT, obviously they re coming for you.. I hope u have not forgotten the number one cardinal part of this democracy is the freedom of the press. ‪#‎Irestmycase‬

Ugochukwu Michael

Its a lesson to me and others bcos AIT did not dream of Buhari becoming d president of our great nation. Ait counted their chicks b4 they were hatched and 4got that its only God that knows d egg that will be hatched.

Ommyl Ibukun

@sonia reali?? freedom of press?? to attack a particular candidate?? nope I disagree wiv dat!! when you talk bout freedom of press u don't come out and tarnish anoda person's image!! accept it!! AIT went too far!!

Jesse Osayande Vucinic Ehiagwina

Nigerian have a big problem with reaching to make a point. So cos AIT got their due means our freedom to post things online is now threatened? If you really think this is the beginning then move to the US where you think they have a greater freedom of expression. You'll be disappointed to find out about the clamp down on freedom going on there in the last decade. Deal with it, AIT are paying the price for sowing in a field of thorns. Also, remember what Dokpesi did during the elections in Etsako? He's lost his bearing. Now getting too involved in politics.

Sule Beeti Snow Audu

Ppl mentioning democracy and freedom of the press on this AIT issue are ignorant of what they are saying. Democracy and freedom of the press is not licence to behave irresponsible and unethical. Buhari as president elect has right to choose who cover his events, and when he's finally sworn in AIT will have apply for accredition to cover the president's event.
