POLITICS: The Main Reason Why Governors, Business moguls, others raised N21bn for GoodLuck Jonathan Presidential campaign

PDP Governors, Senators, Business moguls, technocrats and others gathered at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Sunday 20th December to make financial commitment to support President Jonathan's re-election campaigns.

At the fundraising dinner, 21 PDP Governors donated N50million each which came to N1.05billion. Business owners in the Oil and Gas sector donated N5billion while their counterparts in the Real Estate & Building made a donation of N4billion.

Players in the Transport and Aviation sector made a pledge of N1billion, those in Agriculture donated N500million while those in the power sector pledged N500m. Board of the Shelter Development Limited donated N250million while players in the Construction sector pledged N310million. Road Construction players pledged N250million while the National Automative Association pledged N450million. The Chairman of the fundraising dinner, Mr Tunde Ayeni made a donation of N2billion while the Chairman of SIFAX group donated 100million. The Rivers state PDP Chapter donated N50million.

Africa's Richest man, Aliko Dangote who was made the Chief Fund Raiser was absent at the event as he is said to be out of Nigeria but his representative, Joseph Makanju promised that the business mogul would make his donation known once he arrives Nigeria. 

With all the monies announced at the fundraising dinner as well as those from private individuals, a total of N21.27bn was realized.

What happened is normal and done everywhere in the world...presidential candidates gather friends and associates to donate towards their campaign. But what we Nigerians don't get is a private individual like Tunde Ayeni, the chairman of SKYE Bank donating N2billion. So, if he donates that amount to the president, is it for something he will get later from his administration or it's just goodwill?

A power sector donating to the Prez?. That should tell you all. The same sector that's saying they don't have money?. The same sector that's been borrowing from the FG?. Anyone who thinks that sector was privatized is really naïve.

Dangote doesn't need to show public support. He's a PDP member. One whom the Govt of Nigeria continue to favour and giving him powers to a monopolistic economy. Should there be a power shift, I'd not be shocked to see a probe of his wealth. Infact, I'd back on it. He's one of the oligarchs.

@ David. Buhari is an enemy the oligarchs won't like. Infact they don't like him. Shame that he's already a known quantity when it comes to his tolerance or lack of on corruption. If he was a fresh face they might think twice. That was how Putin successfully made Russia what she is today. He was someone they trusted and thought they could influence but they were wrong. All the oligarchs that tried to play politics paid dearly.
