Biographies Of Nigerian Heroes And Past Leaders

       NNAMDIAZIKIWE
·         Nnamdi Azikiwe was born Novermber 16, 1904in Anambra state. In 1924, he gained scholarship to study in the United Stateof America and also secureda teaching job at Lincoln University. He was amongthe Nigerian heroes that fought gallantly for Nigera’s independence whichbecame a reality on 0ctober 1st 1960 and he became  the first indigenous president of Nigeria.He ruled from 1960 to 1966 and died on Nov.16, 1996.

·         GEN.YAKUBO GOWON
·         Yakubo Gowon hails from the northern Nigeriaand was born in 1934. He joined Nigeria Army in 1954 and was later promoted toBattalion commanda.Yakubu Gowon became the Head of State in 1966 and ruled till1975. He created 12 state in Nigeria.

·         GEN.IBRAHIM BABANGIDA
·         Gen. Ibrahim Babangida was born in 1941 inMinna, Niger State. He was among thepoliticians that disrupted the Nigeria’sthird republic in 1983 and later became the Head of State in 1985. He created 9states and left office in 1993.

·         GEN.SANI ABACHA
·         The late Nigerian dictator, Sani Abachawas born 20 September 1943. He was the chief of Army Staff during Gen.Babangida regime and was later promoted to the minister for finance in 1990.Sani Abacha took over power and became the Head of State in 1993. His deathterminated his service to the nation on June 8, 1998.

·         ALH.SHEHU SHAGARI
·         Shehu Shagari was born on May 25, 1925 inSokoto state. He was a school teacher before he joined politics in 1954. Hebecame the second republic president on 11 August 1979. He got presidentialticket under National Party of Nigeria (NPN) for second tenure in 1983 election,He won the election and ruled for only three months but was dismissed by coupd’ tat.

·         He was born on J        une in Minna, Niger State. Hewas appointed the Chief Of Defense on Nov. 17 1993 and was also the chairman ofcommonwealth Eminent observers mission to the parliamentary election in Zimbabwe; He was the last military Head of Statebefore Nigeriagained back Democratic government in 1999. He was appointed as the Head ofStates on 8 June 1978 after the death of Gen. Sani Abacha.

·         LATECHIEF M.K.O ABIOLA
·         He was born on 21 August 1937 in Abiokuta,Ogun State. He contested for the annulledJune 12 1993  presidentil election andwon but was arrested and detained on 23rd June by his Politicalopponents. On June 1996 his wife Alh. Kudirat Abiola was assassinated andburied on Juy 5, 1996. On 7 July, 1998 the great Nigerian Politician M.K.OAbiola died while in detention at the age of 60. Eversince then, Nigeriadon’t seen to forget June 12 presidential annulled election which is now tagged“The freest and fairest election”

·         ALH.UMARU MUSA YAR’DUA
·         He was born in 1951 in Katsina state. Hisfather, Gen Shehu Musa Yar’dua was the minister of Lagos state during the first republic and onMarch 13, 1995 he was arrested over a coup plot. Later in December 1997 he diedwhile in jail at the age of 54.
·         Umaru Musa Yar’daua got his first degree,BSc in Chemistry at Ahmadu Bellow UniversityI 1975. Later in 1980 he got his MSc. degree in Analytical chemistry still inthe same University. Umaru Musa Yar’dua first appearance in politics was duringthe second republic as a member of Leftist Peoples Redemption Party (LRP), butwas fully into the horn of politics in 199 when he contested for governorshipposition in Katsina state and won. He ruled Katsina state for eight years(1999-2007) and also emerged PDP flagbearer for presidency in2007 generalelection which he also won. Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua is the 5threpublic President of Nigeria.

·         GEN.OLUSANGO OBASANJO
·         He was born on March 1937 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He attendedBaptist High School Abeokuta and proceeded to Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) forfour years course and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army. OlusangoObasanjo was appointed the Head of State after the death of Murtala Mohamed in1976. He was arrested on March 13, 1995 over a coup plot and was bailed on 15June 1998. Later in 1999 he found Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he gotthe presidential ticket in1999 general election and also emerged winner. Heruled Nigeriaagain as a civilian for eight years, between May 29 1999 to May 2007.

·         REV.CHRIS OKOTIE
·         He was born on 16 June 1959 in Deltastate. He is the son of late chief Felix Okotie, a former minister for finaceduring the first republic, who was killed in 1996 Millitary coup. Chris Okotiestudied at University of Nigeria Nsukka wherehe studied law. He became a promsising Pop music singer in the 90’s. Rev.Okotie went to  GraceFellowship BibleSchool and has been the pastor ofHouse of God Church International Ministries ,Lagos since 1987. He is the first clergymanin Nigeriato aspire for Presidency. He had been a presidential aspirant under Fresh Partin2003 and 2007 general eletion but lost it to Olusango Obasanjo and Umuru MusaYar’adua respectively.

·         CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO
·         Obafemi Awolowo was born in 1909.He studied at Wesley College and was the premier of Western Nigeria. He also contributed to the reality of Nigeria independence. ObafemiAwolowo was arrested and detained in 1963 but ws released in 1966. He was alsothe commissioner for Finance in 1967.

·         HERBERT MACAULAY
·         Herbert Macaulay was born on Nov.14 1864. He studied at United Kingdom under government scholarship at theage of 26. Macaulay was the founder of the first political party in Nigerianamely  “National Democratic Party” in191923. Abigail Macaulay his mother was the daughter to Samuel Ajayi Crowther.Herbert Macaulay died at the age of 81.

·         BISHOP AJAYI CROWTHER
·         He was born in 1806. At a tenderage of 15 he was sold by Fulani slave traders to the Portuguese but was freedby Britain and was allowedto settle in Sierra Leone.He was baptized at the age of 24 and was ordained as a priest in 1843.Hetranslated the English bible into Yoruba and was the first African Bishop of the Niger Dioceses in 1804.

·         MARY SLESSOR.
·         Mary Slessor was born on December 2nd 1848 atScotland.She came from a peasant family and was a missionary. She came to Nigeriaon September 11, 1875 at Calabar. She stopped the killing of twins at Calabarand contributed to the betterment of her family and the world at large. Shedied on January 13, 1915 at the age of 67.

·         KING JAJA OF OPOBO
·         He was born in 1821. He was soldout by Bonny traders at the age of 12. From a slave, he became the Head of AnnaPepple House and established a settlement named Opobo. He was shipping Palm Oilto Liverpool but British Council opposed him.King Jaja was arrested of TREATY BREAKING and blocking the high ways of tradeby British council; He was sent to Ghana and later deported to St.Vincent West Indies. He died after returning from prison.

·         PROF. USMAN DAN FUDIO
·         Usman Dan Fudio was born in 1754 atMarata in Gobir. He was the founder of Sokoto Caliphate (Northern Nigeria) He studied Koran and was a school teacher. He critize theHausa elites for their heavy taxation and violation of Islamic laws. He waselectd Iman (Leader) of the Reformist Muslims and he launched the JIHAD (holywar) that brought down the Hausa royalty. After his death in 1787, MohamedBellow succeded him as the rulerof Sokoto caliphate (then the largest state in Africa).

·         LATE PROF. CHIKE OBI
·         The renowned NigerianMathematician, late Prof. Chike Obi was born on April 7 1921 in Eastern Nigeria. He attended St. Patrick Primary SchoolZaria and Christ the King College Onitsha for his preparatory education. Helater proceeded to Yaba College of Technology and University of London.He became the first Nigeriato get PhD in Mathematics after studying at PembroksCollege of the University of Cambridgein 1950. Late Prof. Chike Obi was a mathematician, University Lecturer, Authorand a Scientist. He died on March 13, 2008 at the age of 87.
