…Eight persons Arrested for killing elephant in Ogun State…

…It is a Serious Crime to Kill Elephant Because They Are Endangered Species…

Eight villagers are currently under the custody of the Ogun State Police Command over their alleged involvement in the killing of an elephant in a forest reserve.
The reserve, popularly called “Elephants Forest” is situated at a border area in Ijebu-Igbo,in Ijebu North local government area of Ogun State.
The Ogun State commissioner for forestry, Ayo Olubori, who disclosed this to journalists in Abeokuta, explained that he passed a night in the jungle with his team before the suspects could be arrested.
Olubori said that the accused persons have been taken to a police station in Ijebu-Igbo for further interrogation.
He described the act as a very serious crime, adding that the elephant was killed in the early hours of Thursday by a man whose name he did not disclose.
According to him, the man was joined by some villagers, who helped in slaughtering and dismembering the animal.
“The suspected killer of the wild animal was arrested on the spot at 1a.m after a-three hour journey into the forest reserves.
“The animal is an endangered species, we have them in limited number and if care is not taken, they may go into extinction. We don’t want to be sanctioned by Wild life activists.
“We will charge the suspects to court hopefully by Monday. Preliminary report of the investigation has shown that, the man was sent by some prominent people in society to get them the elephant’s tusks which cost N25 million each and he had confessed to the crime and he is on tape”, he said.
