The 34-year-old passed away yesterday, Wednesday 1st May at an Atlanta hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home.
The cause of death is so far not yet known although an autopsy is in the making today, Thursday.
Kelly and fellow rapper, Chris Smith rose to fame in 1992 with song, “Jump”. The song spent eight weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. That year, they opened for Michael Jackson on his Dangerous World Tour. They were also known for wearing their clothes backward, a fashion style which sold like hot cakes during that time.
“I’m wearing my clothes to work backwards tomorrow,” Michael Skolnik, editor in chief of the hip hop site Global Grind said, when he learned of the death.
“We often heard him playing classical music and the piano,” Leslie Tookes, a CNN project coordinator said. “He was a low-key type of person who was very talented and courteous, friendly and wonderful to our 5-year-old twins. Indeed, gone too soon.”
Kelly and Smith were discovered aged 13-year-olds in 1991 at an Atlanta mall by producer Jermaine Dupri. They quickly rose to fame with their first hit song which pushed their debut album, “Totally Krossed Out,” to multiplatinum status.
Although they never succeeded like they did on their debut album, the duo released another album, “Young, Rich and Dangerous” in 1996.
Rapper Da Brat wrote about Kelly’s death, ” REST IN PEACE TO MY LIL BRO CHRIS KELLY OF KRIS KROSS. Dam wasn’t we JUST at rehearsal and doin a So So Def20 show?”
