Ogun lawmakers apologise for Assembly fracas, resolve crisis…

Feuding members of the Ogun State House of Assembly on Wednesday apologised to the people of the state for their conduct that resulted in the breaking of the mace, the legislature’s symbol of authority.

The apology was offered after Governor Ibikunle Amosun had successfully brokered peace between the two warring factions of the Assembly to sheathe their swords in the interest of the people.
Amosun also resolved the tussle over the leadership of the Assembly between the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, and Remmy Hazzan, who was appointed Protem Speaker by 13 other lawmakers following the crisis.
The battle of wits between the two factions of the lawmakers in the Ogun Assembly had on Tuesday led to the suspension and counter-suspension of some of the members of the Assembly.
Hazzan and Adekunbi however apologised to the people of the state over the embarrassment the commotion that occurred on the floor of the state legislature on Tuesday might have caused.
The simmering crisis that rocked Ogun State House of Assembly since last week boiled over on Tuesday as pandemonium broke out on the floor of the House following an attempt by the Speaker to suspend four “errant” lawmakers.
The Assembly’s plenary session last Thursday had ended in confusion following disagreements on the composition of the Assembly’s Tender’s Board.
Amosun, after a three-hour closed door meeting with the lawmakers in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, however, prevailed on the factions to shift grounds in order not to hamper the development of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that a former Speaker of the Assembly, Tunji Egbetokun, who is the current Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, was instrumental to the quick resolution of the disagreements between the 26 lawmakers.
Speaking with journalists after a group photograph with the lawmakers, Amosun apologised to the people of Ogun State and all the lovers of democracy on behalf of the lawmakers.
“The only thing I want to say is that on behalf of them, I apologise to the good people of Ogun State and all lovers of democracy. This is Ogun State: the home of Awolowo, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and other giants, who have laboured selflessly to make us what we are,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives had earlier on  Wednesday  urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to ensure that law and order were maintained at the Ogun State House of Assembly.
Members of the House also appealed to all political leaders and public spirited individuals in the state to intervene in the conflict to nip the emerging crisis in the bud.
The resolution was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Ossai Ossai( PDP/ Delta).
In it, Ossai urged  the House to intervene in the crisis in the State legislature.
Ossai noted  that  crisis engulfed the  House of Assembly last Thursday, which culminated in a commotion which  led to the destruction of the symbol of authority, the mace.
