Writer Peter Berg accuses Romney of plagiarism

Peter Berg, the creator of the TV show "Friday Night Lights" is accusing Mitt Romney of plagiarizing from the mantra of the show for a slogan he uses on campaign posters, in speeches, and on his Facebook page. On Friday, Berg wrote a letter to Mr. Romney saying "he's not thrilled" by him using the phrase "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose" because he stole it from Friday Night Lights, The AP reports. On the show, a football coach uses the same phrase to motivate and inspire his players before each game. "That's Americans," Romney said in Iowa earlier this week. "We have clear eyes-we know what we believe. Full hearts. We love this country and we can't lose," the NY Daily News reports. "This is a time for Americans to make a choice. We're going to take back this country."

Buzz Bissinger, the author of the Friday Night Lights book believes Berg should take this as an honor and be flattered.

Buzz and Peter are actually cousins.

"I love Pete, but he is being childish and petulant, Bissinger told The Hollywood Reporter. "He should be flattered that Romney is honoring his show. Obama tried to use the slogan was well, but unsurprisingly was ineffective in getting the message across."

Peter Berg is an Obama supporter and does not want anyone to think Romney's politics are in way aligned with his TV series, The AP reports.

Regarding, Bissinger's comments, Berg is indeed flattered. In his letter, he thanks the Republican presidential candidate for his support, but also says, "Please come up with your own slogan."

Berg also tells Mr. Romney that the only relative comparison he sees between his campaign and the TV show is the character of Buddy Garrity, a former football player in the fictional town of Dillion, Texas who "turns his back on American car manufactures" to sell imported cars from Japan, US Weekly reports.

Scott Porter, who played Buddy Garrity took to Twitter to give his thoughts on the situation.

"Clear eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose. And by Pete Berg didn't even trademark it. #shame," he tweeted Thursday. "Oh. And the by the way, Obama did it first...and more classy. #Cleareyesfullhearts."

Buzz Bissinger finds the whole whole thing hypocritical.

"Berg is just another member of the Hollywood glitterati whose idea of liberalism is making sure their Mexican gardeners get paid only several dollars below minimum wage," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "He has no idea what and who Romney is about. I find his letter uninformed and offensive."
