Jaspal Bhatti died after the car in which he was traveling in hit a trawler near Shahkot in Nakodar area of the district around 1 am, Mr Bhatti’s associate Vinod Sharma told PTI.
Mr Sharma said that Jaspal Bhatti was going to Jalandhar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his Punjabi film Power Cut .
The satirist’s son Jasraj who was driving the car and actress Surilie Gautam, the heroine of his film ‘Power Cut’ which is to be released on Friday, were seriously injured in the mishap, police said.
They were rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar where Bhatti was declared brought dead.
“His body was brought to the hospital after 3am and after medical examination he was declared dead,” said Dr Harpreet Singh.
The comedian used humour and satire to highlight serious issues like corruption, inflation and female foeticide.Mr Bhatti is known for his television series Flop Show and Ulta Pulta, which were a hit in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Mr Bhatti has also appeared in a few Hindi movies. He was seen in Aamir Khan and Kajol’s Fanaa where he played the role of a guard named Jolly Good Singh.
Born on March 3, 1955 at Amritsar, Bhatti graduated from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh as an electrical engineer.
During his college days, he was popular for his street plays which were spoofs ridiculing corruption in society. Before venturing into television, he was a cartoonist for the The Tribune newspaper in Chandigarh.
