…Newspaper Editor Arrested for Calling President a Rat…

Police in Sierra Leone have arrested a newspaper editor and another journalist for publishing an article comparing President Ernest Bai Koroma to a rat, officials said on Monday.
Jonathan Leigh, who edits the Independent Observer newspaper, was detained with another member of staff on Thursday last week after he wrote the editorial alleging friction between Koroma and his vice-president Sam Sumana.
The article said Koroma, a former insurance executive elected in 2007, was behaving like a rat.
Ibrahim Koroma, head of Sierra Leone’s Criminal Investigations Department, said Leigh had breached the Public Order Act of 1965 by committing seditious libel. Leigh has not yet been officially charged.
“He is bringing the name of President Koroma and the whole cabinet into disrepute,” said Koroma of the investigation department, who is not related to the president.
A spokesman for president Koroma said the leader had filed a complaint “like any aggrieved citizen”.

….Bishop DAVID OYEDEPO Has a Dream…

“Covenant University Will Be Among World’s Top 10 by the Year 2022”

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, said on Monday that the institution would be among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022.

Oyedepo made the remark at the institution’s 11th Founder’s Day celebration in Ota.

According to him, the university has since inception in 2002, focused on actualising its mandate, which is primarily to raise leaders who will change the world.

Oyedepo said that already, the university had surpassed set standards but was not relenting till it achieved its desired 2022 dream, tagged: Vision 10: 2022, (1 of 10 in 10).

“It is in view of this that we are launching our new vision and, therefore want to charge the faculty managements to invest maximally in the review of our curriculum.

“We must strive to review pragmatically, the contents of our curriculum by bringing it into the realities of the day.

“Let us not be afraid of trying out new things in new ways because unless this is done, you cannot move forward.

“We must strive to have the creative mind of Christ to review our curriculum in order to truly meet the needs of the society,” he said.

The Chancellor said that empowering the people intellectually and practicalising it through inventions and discoveries was key in taking universities to higher levels.

He charged the students to be excellent performers, especially in the area of self-discipline, as it was a major tool in becoming great leaders.

The chancellor later inaugurated projects in the institution, among which was the vision 10:2022 (1 of 10 in 10) billboard.

He also inaugurated the glass blowing laboratory at the chemistry department of the institution as part of activities lined up for the celebration.

The laboratory is meant for fabricating, moulding and re-moulding of glass.

The Head of Department of Chemistry, Dr Kolawale Ajanaku, said that the laboratory would enable students to turn waste to wealth by picking up broken glasses and putting them into use.

He said that the laboratory would not serve the students alone but would be open to members of the public for training.

Covenant University, which was established on Oct. 21, 2002, has graduated more than 10, 000 students.

-The World's First Bionic Man With Heart And Circulatory System -

…Has Been Created, His Name is FRANK….

Meet Frank, a robot made of prosthetic limbs and body parts. He has a beating heart and complete circulatory system. He's the world's first full Bionic Man to be introduced at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum at Washington, D.C.

It's not fake. He's real...and he's the first! Frank, the 'bionic man' is 6 feet and weighs 170 lbs. His face is made of synthetic parts and modeled after Bertolt Meyer, a social psychologists from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Meyer thought it was awkward when he first saw his replica. Meyer will also be hosting the documentary created to show the making of Frank and shed insight on the bionic man.

Frank's voice is similar to Siri on an Apple iPhone, and his personality is programmed to mimic a 13-year-old Ukrainian boy. This robot cost a whopping $1 million. Not bad at all, in comparison to many expensive projects that scientists attempt which eats up taxpayers' money. Frank has over 2/3rd of the human body. He has an artificial heart, a programmed, legs, pancreas, head, see-through chest, and some body parts you probably didn't know existed. These artificial organs were actually donated from laboratories around the world. So, it's a joint effort of several global scientists.

Frank, however, does not have a liver, stomach, and intestines because they are too complicated to generate in a lab. Frank's assembly took 3 months and was directed by roboticists Rich Walker and Matthew Godden of Shadow Robot Co. in England. This is a ground-breaking scientific development. Scientist and roboticists never cease to amaze me.

I don't know if Frank is worth the cost of a flight to Washington. Nevertheless, I'm willing to check out the documentary premiering on October 20. I'm interested in knowing how these scientists replicated Frank's prosthetic body parts.

The creation of this bionic man raises some ethical questions: "Does creating something so life-like threaten notions of what it means to be human? What amount of body enhancement should be allowed or acceptable? And is it wrong that only some people have access to these life-extending technologies?

…Nigeria Army begins massive recruitment…

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said the army had commenced massive recruitment to tackle the security challenge in the country.
Ihejirika said this while opening a five-day seminar organised by the army’s Department of Civil-Military Affairs at the 2 Div. Odogbo, Ibadan on Monday.
“I have commenced the recruitment of 9,000 persons in our various training institutions’’, Ihejirika said.
The COAS, represented by Maj. Gen. John Ewansiha, said the objective of the seminar was to foster better working relations with civil society organisations toward winning hearts and minds.
Ihejirika reiterated the intention of the army to train and retrain its officers in order to meet the security challenge of the country.
“Indeed, the Nigerian army is currently occupied with domestic challenges in several parts of the country, especially in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States’’, he said.
The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Maj. Gen. Bola Koleoso, said the seminar was part of the quests to resolve the crisis currently facing the nation.
“As we all know, the civil society organisations stand for the defence of human rights everywhere as well as in crisis situations.
“The military aims at defeating insurgents as well as protecting law-abiding citizens’’, he said.
Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, who was the guest of honour, stressed the need for constant engagement and discussion between the civil and military publics.
“The modus operandi of the military is force; obedience to order and immediacy of that obedience. The modus operandi of the civil public is persuasion and constant engagement, which takes time“, he said.
Ajimobi said the task of such relationship should thus be how to bring the two publics together to pursue same agenda for the democratic vision of the nation.
“The Nigerian civil public cannot afford to stand aloof from the military.
“Since independence, the military has fought wars toward the sustenance of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“It has lost thousands of its men who are martyrs of the peace and nationhood we enjoy today.
“We cannot but support the military in its quest to protect the nation and her territorial borders’’, the governor said.
The theme of the seminar is: “Consolidating Civil Society Organisations/Military Relations for Improved National Security.’’

…Daughters offered resistance anytime he approached them for sexual intercourse…..

Why I slept with my two daughters — By BOLUWAJI OBAHOPO, Lokoja
Kogi State Police command has paraded a 53-year old man,Yusuf Alabi for allegedly having carnal Knowledge of his two daughters.

Parading the suspect, the Acting police commissioner, Austine Evbakhabokun said, Alabi was apprehended following a complaint by one of his sons, Abdulmalik to the state investigation and intelligence bureau, alleging that his father was having intimate intercourse with two of his younger sisters.

The CP said when the boy challenged his father for committing the act, the suspect threatened to kill him if the news got to the public, cajoling the son that he was protecting his sisters.

Austine said the suspect has also confessed to the crime with an explanation that he committed the illicit acts in order to save his children from premature death.

The suspect also made a shocking statement while being questioned by journalists that none of his daughters offered resistance anytime he approached them for sexual intercourse.

In a shocking twist, the wife of the suspect has called on the police not to prosecute her husband saying though he might have committed the crime but the issue is a ‘family matter’ and should be allowed to be settled in the family way.
