The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has resumed the strike it suspended in January 2011 following alleged failure by the Federal Government to implement the agreement it reached with the public universities lecturers.

…Governor Amaechi Escapes Death As Suspicious Vehicle Rams Into His Convoy…

The Rivers State Governor Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi early yesterday evening miraculously escaped unhurt as a suspicious vehicle rammed into his convoy along Igwuruta road on the Governor’s way to the Port Harcourt International Airport.

According to eyewitness account, the accident was caused by the intrusion of a Toyota Avensis with registration number AAA 767 AQ that rammed into the Governor’s convoy from the opposite side of the dual carriageway, just after the C4I Security Post along the Port Harcourt International Airport Road.
Fortunately no life was lost and the driver of the vehicle was apprehended and handed over to the police.
Rivers State since the last 3 months have been in the news as political bigwigs in the state outwit themselves in a bid to wrest political power and control the political landscape of the oil rich state. Events reached their climax recently when the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu openly lambasted the Governor whom he described as a Dictator.

The governor earlier in the day was reported to have demanded the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police whom many believe has pitched tent with Abuja-based politicians who are the governor’s political adversaries. The Police high command, in the meantime has however denied knowledge of any affray between Governor Amaechi and the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu.

Nigerian pop star Wizkid has spoken out against his continuous impersonation by fraudsters. The hit maker, bugged by increasing complaints and reported incidents, says he's worried and beyond scandalised, that some bandits would go to any length to perpetrate evil acts and defraud innocent fans and customers.

The EME act spoke today in Lagos, while reacting to on-going investigations on recent discoveries and arrests.
“It’s unfair that fraudsters will take advantage of unsuspecting victims. The culprit has been apprehended and all is being done to make sure such incidents don’t reoccur.” Wizkid said.

An EME impostor is currently in police custody. He was handed over to the police by his latest victim- Muyiwa.
Muyiwa also known as ‘Origin’ started transactions with the impostor, only to discover he was being duped and quickly handed him over to the police.
Meanwhile, EME Chairman Banky W who has himself been a victim of impersonation, says the label is putting all structures in place, while working with relevant authorities to make sure the trend is put to a stop.
Fake names, phone numbers and bank accounts have been set up to carry out such fraudulent activities. Some of the fake accounts these impostors use include "Bankole Wellington Banky W" on Facebook,Bankyw82@yahoo.com, emeonline82@yahoo.com,godwintom1@gmail.com,starboyentertainment@rocketmail.com. “Impersonating artists and record labels is apparently the new 419. This is not a unique problem to EME or it's acts, but a serious challenge to most major labels/artists as well as the fans and event organizers. “It saddens us to know that crooks still try to take advantage of our fans and supporters but we are doing all we can to put the right info out and we hope that everyone takes note, so as not to fall into their traps.” He adds.

Wizkid does not take bookings or accept engagement payments into his account. He can only be booked through EME and/or his manager Godwin Tom.

The label says the Police will still apprehend more fraudsters.

There have been some questions about OJB's need for a $100,000 since Juliet Ibrahim mentioned Kidney transplants could be done with $50,000.
The ailing producer explained why he needs that much to Encomuim Magazine.
"The mistake she's making is that it depends on the hospital you are going to in India. She says she runs a foundation, they might give her a rebate. The procedure itself is $55, 000. When you take out $55, 000, you are left with $45, 000. What about the running cost of the procedure? You don't go to India only to come back and start asking for help again. At least, I need some money to maintain myself for the next one year. So when you factor in all these costs, add air tickets and lodging, you will appreciate what we are talking about”

Chairman of South-East Governors’s Forum and Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi has announced his retirement from active politics.

The Governor, who disclosed this on Sunday, said he would quit active politics at the end of his current tenure in March 2014.

He spoke at the thanksgiving service and award ceremony to mark the end of the 2nd Session of the 15th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Enugu at the St. Bartholomew’s Church, Asata, Enugu.

“A very prominent person called me today and asked me, what is your plan concerning politics after your current tenure, I’m telling you now what I told him.

“For me, I have come to the end of it; I want to quit and rest. However, I have been praying to God that for the sake of the good people of Anambra State, please give them somebody like Peter Obi.

“The level of greed in Nigeria is overwhelming, where people can’t see the suffering of other people, they are just accumulating wealth, for me, it is time to go.

“I wonder why one person should own a house in Ikoyi, Asokoro, Dubai and he is not using them for anything, people accumulate what they don’t need, it is madness, the level of greed in Nigeria is intolerable.

“I want all of us to be praying for Nigeria, so that God will touch the heart of our leaders to use public money for the people. In Anambra State we have never borrowed money despite all the works we are doing”.

The Governor, who was quite emotional lamented the level of financial waste in government, stressing “the cost of running a governor’s office in Nigeria is too much.

“When I came in as Governor, I discovered that the state had 70 workers in Abuja office, apart from their salary we spend close to 15 million maintaining that office. They have nothing doing there than to come to the airport and welcome me, constituting nuisance, so we re-deployed the workers and closed down the place. Till date, we have not missed them, which means they were really doing nothing there”.

“I urge all of us to pray for greedy people in this country; they are accumulating what they don’t need, stop accumulating things for your children”, he charged politicians, stressing that he had never bought a car for any of his children.

“I have told them to buy cars when they make their money, I have also never celebrated birthday for them. They can do that when they leave my house. We should stop wasting public fund”.

…Cash-less Policy Begins In Kano, Anambra, Rivers, Ogun, Abia & Abuja…

IT will no longer be business as usual for bankers and their customers in Kano, Anambra, Abia, Rivers, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as electronic platforms take the centre stage of banking activities in those states beginning from yesterday Monday July 1, 2013.

Already, banks are sensitising customers for take-off of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cash-less policy in the five additional states, with some of them sending text messages to account holders alerting them on new cash deposit and withdrawal benchmarks as well as other requirements of the scheme.

Although the Lagos pilot project, which began a year ago, is still fraught with challenges, ranging from poor ICT infrastructure to network ‘downtimes’ associated with poor quality of GSM services, among other bottlenecks, the CBN governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had insisted that the project would be extended to these states in preparation for a nationwide rollout. The focus, however, is on key commercial and urban centres of Onitsha, Kano, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Aba.

The apex bank cited heavy cash transactions in many of the states’ market or urban centres as the compelling reason for taking the scheme in the areas. But it is feared that the banks will still have to grapple with the traditional banking habits and, sometimes, low literacy and awareness level of the majority of businessmen in some of those states, many of whom are yet to understand the details despite the CBN’s campaign.

A big chunk of the rural population in communities that feed into the commercial/ urban areas in most of the selected states remain semi-literate, sometimes completely operating outside of the formal banking system.

“For this reason, we are educating our customers, said an official of one of the new generation banks in Lagos.

Asked to explain what the policy portends for those that would, henceforth, need banking services in the designated areas, she said new cash deposit and withdrawal benchmarks of N300,000 (for personal accounts and N3 million (for corporate accounts) will now be applied in the affected areas.

Also, third-party cheques in excess of N150,000 can no longer be “cash-drawn” over the counter, even as she explained that “although you can use your ATM card to do transactions on a Point of Sale (POS) machine and other electronic/internet channels, you can no longer do more than N150,000 cash withdrawal with your ATM card in a day.”

Meanwhile, World Bank’s Payment Systems and Remittances Specialist, Carlo Corazza, said ‘revolution’ in global payment system has resulted in great savings, which are significant for development purposes.

Corazza made the disclosure at the conference on cash-less initiative, organised by DeNovo Limited and Reach Legal Consulting, in conjunction with the CBN, in Lagos.

“Going electronic,” he said, “can save about 75 per cent of costs usually associated with cash-based regime, which is huge, especially in this era of stretched resources, urging stakeholders to support the scheme.

According to him, the system has also lowered the costs associated with physical barriers in international trade, making it easier for access to financial services in various countries, another positive signal in international cooperation.

But Deputy Governor, Operations, CBN, Tunde Lemo, who was represented by the Director of Banking and Payments System Department, Dipo Fatokun, said the initiative became necessary, given the fact that an efficient payment system enhances financial inclusion, effective transmission mechanism of monetary policy and overall financial stability.

“This is because the cost of cash and associated risk of a cash-driven economy to Nigeria’s financial system were high and in response to these challenges, CBN and the Bankers’ Committee initiated the ‘Cash-Less Nigeria’ project with the pilot run in Lagos and now to be extended to five additional states- Abia, Anambra, Ogun, Kano, Rivers and Abuja by July 1.

“Just this month, we went live on cheque truncation nationwide, thereby making cheque payments to clear within a clearing cycle of T+1. The CBN has licensed about 18 mobile payment operators to offer payment services via the mobile phone that over 100 million Nigerians carry.

Fatokun added that the cash-less policy was designed to promote financial intermediation and inclusion, minimise revenue leakages and increase revenue generation, as well as reduce incidences of robbery and amount of cash payments in the system by encouraging electronic payments.

The policy on withdrawal allows individual customer to make cumulative withdrawal of N500, 000 daily across the counters and the ATM. “Withdrawal above this limit will attract the payment of a processing fee of three percent for the amount above the limit,” the official said.

“Corporate customers are allowed to make cumulative withdrawal of N3, 000,000 daily. Withdrawal above the limit will attract a processing fee of five percent.

“The policy on lodgment allows individual customer to make cumulative lodgment of N500, 000 daily. Lodgment above the limit will attract a processing fee of 2 percent above the limit.

“Corporate customers are allowed to make cumulative lodgment of N3, 000,000 daily. Lodgment above the limit will attract a processing fee of three percent above the limit.

“I need to make it clear that it is the account to which withdrawal and lodgment is made that bears the processing charges and not the individual that receives or deposits the cash.

“Cumulative withdrawal/lodgment means the totality of all withdrawals and lodgments across all the customer’s accounts in the bank.”

John and Love Kumuyi tendered an apology letter to the church on the 22nd of June, but it seems the leaders already have their own plans. The couple have been suspended from the church. The church leaders also said, their wedding didn't take place in a Deeper Life Church in Jamaica and the church's tradition of dressing moderately still holds. Letter of Apology
John and Love Kumuyi, write to express our deepest and most sincere apology for the turn of events, that have resulted on our traditional and wedding ceremonies, that took place in Jamaica on 13th June and 15th June, 2013 respectively.

We unreservedly and wholeheartedly state, that we did not intend that our acts or omissions will in any way undermine the great works that God has done through the Deeper Christian Life Ministry Worldwide and more specifically , through our Father in the Lord, the General Superintendent (GS).

We also use this medium to profusely and sincerely apologies to the general superintendent for the embarrassment and heartaches our actions have caused him, more so that he had earlier declined to be at the events.

We acknowledge that we may have been distracted by cultural differences, as both of us have been outside the country for the past two decades. This notwithstanding, we fully accept that having being nurtured, taught and brought up with the sound teaching of the word of God, we should have been able to draw the line, which we failed to do.

We have now realized the effects of our actions and omission and do plead with the church for forgiveness and also appealing that any action that should be taken be directed at John and Love, as we take this time to prayerfully reflect on our actions.

We take full responsibility for what happened, and this action should in no way be blamed on the GS, or the leaders of the church in Nigeria, United States, Jamaica or United Kingdom and beyond.

The Church
The church says it has decided to place the couple on suspension to give them time to pray and seek forgiveness from God for their action and was announced by Pastor Philip Oluwi, a key leader in the church.Oluwi, certainly is acting on the instruction from the General Superintendent of the church, Pastor William Kumuyi, to suspend the couple for the embarrassment they brought upon the church during the wedding, emphasizing that the standard of Deeper Life regarding wedding and moderacy had not changed.

“The church, Deeper Life, remains committed to the biblical practice and standard of almost 40 years Christian dressing and still remains and does not compromise on biblical Christian dressing.

“Hence, deviation warrants the displeasure and frown of God and the leadership of the church. John and Love are now under discipline,” Oluwi announced to the entire congregation, an action that helped to calm the nerves of many Deeper Life faithful.

However, P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that John and Love’s wedding was not conducted in a Deeper Life Bible Church.

It was also not conducted by pastors from the church as Deeper Life Bible Church in Jamaica has not been licensed by the country’s government to join couples in wedlock, according to the laws of Jamaica.

The wedding was taken to another church where the ministers in the unnamed church conducted the wedding and joined them in holy matrimony.

Besides, Deeper Life leaders that came from Nigeria were said to have disapproved of the earlier gown Love was to wear for the wedding, while another was hurriedly sewed the night before the wedding.

Church leaders were said not to have seen the new dress until the couple was marching into the church and by then, it was too late to take any action as the wedding was not conducted in a Deeper Life church.

…How Two Pakistani girls Were shot dead for making a video of themselves dancing in the rain…

Two teenage sisters, 16 year old Noor Basra and 15 year old Noor Sheza (both pictured) were shot dead at their home in the town of Chilas, in Pakistan after a video showing the two girls laughing and dancing in the rain was circulated via mobile phones.
Apparently dancing with your sibling in the rain and filming it is a crime punishable by death in the Northern region of Gilgit. The video caused an outrage in the town and a few days later, five men invaded the girls home and shot them dead - for - wait for it - 'tarnishing their family's name'. Their mother was also shot dead.
The girls' step-brother, a man named Khutore, is being accused of arranging their murder because he allegedly wanted to 'restore the family's honour'. The sisters' other brother filed a case against him and the four other alleged accomplices who are now on the run. The police are investigating the case.
