... Boko-Haram Kills WAEC Students And Principal In Borno ...

JUST as Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State is about putting behind it the recent killing of six secondary school teachers, including a principal, the local government was again plunged into mourning as many students were, on Saturday, murdered in cold blood by some gunmen suspected to be members of the Jama’atul Ahlis Sunnah Lid’ Awati, also known as Boko Haram.

Sunday Tribune learnt that the gunmen killed many students of Monguno Secondary School by slitting their throats, after laying an ambush for them as they returned home from centres where they wrote the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Monguno is 135 kilometres North of Maiduguri, the state capital; and it is considered to be an epicentre of activities of the Islamist sect.

The gunmen, according to a villager, Mallam Aisami, ambushed the candidates on their way home on foot and bicycles. He added that the assailants tied the students’ hands together at their backs and slit their throats on the foot paths leading to the school premises in the afternoon.

He said when the dastardly deed had been done, the gunmen fled on three motorcycles towards Marte Local Government Area of Northern Borno before men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) rushed to the scene three hours after the students were already slewn.

Spokesman of JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, and the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, confirmed the incident on Saturday.
They stated that it was a very “unfortunate and frightening incident,” decrying all that had been happening in the state.

Sagir and Kubo could, however, not ascertain the exact number of students allegedly killed by the suspects at Monguno.

Kubo, in a telephone interview, told journalists that; “I am calling on the people of Borno State to continue to pray and fast so that the incessant attacks and killings in the state cease peace and unity are restored.

... MEND destroys oil well, threatens to bomb mosques...

Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta on Sunday claimed responsibility for the destruction of Oil Well 62 belonging to the Shell Petroleum Development Company in Ewellesuo, Nembe Local Government of Bayelsa State.

The militant group said the attack, which occurred on Saturday about 1am, was part of its Operation Hurricane Exodus.

MEND, in an electronic mail by its spokesman, Gbomo Jomo, also announced its readiness to commence fresh hostilities to save Christians from Boko Haram violence.

MEND codenamed the new hostilities, which it said would begin on May 31 and would target mosques and Islamic clerics, as Operation Barbarossa.

The attack on the well head occurred barely a week after MEND claimed responsibility for the killing of 12 policemen along the Azuzuama waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government of the state.

Before the militant group claimed responsibility for the oil well damage, the community had raised the alarm over massive oil spillage from well 62.

Members of the community reportedly accused SPDC of failing to clamp the spill points to avoid further environmental damage.

The Chairman of the Oil and Gas Committee of Nembe Kingdom, Mr. Nengi James, said he appealed to the people to remain calm.

“Since I became Chairman of the Oil and Gas Committee in the kingdom, I have witnessed over 10 massive oil spillages. And all these spillages have never been cleaned up by the oil company.”

But MEND, which claimed responsibility for the spill, said it had concluded plans to rescue Christians from Boko Haram insurgency.

The statement said, “On behalf of the hapless Christian population in Nigeria, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta will from Friday, May 31, 2013, embark on a crusade to save Christianity in Nigeria from annihilation.

“The bombings of mosques, hajj camps, Islamic instututions, large congregations in islamic events and assasinations of clerics that propagate doctrines of hate, will form the core mission of this crusade code named Operation Barbarossa.”

Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta codenamed Operation Pulo Shield has debunked claims by the MEND that it was responsible for renewed hostilities in the region.

JTF’s Media Coordinator, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, said “impostors and a bundle of never-do-wells” were hiding under MEND, which, he said had gone into extinction after the amnesty deal, to perpetrate criminal activities in the region.

He also asked members of the public to discountenace claims by MEND that it had designed a special operation in sympathy for the Christians.

... Police killed ‘foreigner’ for driving against traffic –

 Eyewitness Recounts...

A trader who witnessed the killing of a driver, Santos Korie, by policemen in the Mushin area of Lagos State last Thursday has said the policemen opened fire on him because he drove against traffic.

The witness, Tayo Odunlami, told PUNCH Metro that the driver, Korie, who was earlier described as a foreigner, but had now been properly identified as a Nigeria, was not the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Odunlami added that his younger brother was also present.

Narrating what occurred on the fateful day, Odunlami said, “Around 7am last Thursday, I was carrying out the weekly market sanitation at Daleko Market when I saw a silver-coloured Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle coming from Ilasamaja direction.

“On getting beneath the bridge and driving towards Mushin, he noticed that there was a roadblock due to construction and he claimed he did not know the alternative route to take so a newspaper vendor advised him to reverse and drive against traffic, make a U-turn and then ascend the Daleko Bridge.

“He drove against traffic and as he was about making a U-turn to ascend the bridge, he was accosted by the policemen.

“The policemen were talking to him, but he was smiling and did not roll down his window. The next thing I heard were four gunshots and everyone fled. The man’s car continued to move probably because he had taken his legs off the brakes. The vehicle then rammed into the side of the bridge, damaging the car.”

PUNCH Metro investigations revealed that the killer policemen were attached to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

The witness told our correspondent that the policemen, however, came in without LASTMA officials in a commercial bus which had been seized from its owner and then used it to carry out an illegal operation on that particular day.

He said the surviving occupant of the vehicle had reported the matter at Area D Command.

He said, “The policemen usually work with LASTMA under the bridge and due to the ongoing construction, motorists are usually allowed to drive against traffic. The policemen wanted to extort money from people that morning. That was why they came in a commercial bus and not the LASTMA van.

“After they killed the man, they fled and some commercial motorcycle riders chased them but they shot into the air to scare people away. They then jumped on a motorcycle and fled.

“Meanwhile, the other occupant of the SUV came down and started crying for help. We then advised him to go and report the matter at Area D. The Area Commander, Omololu Bishi, arrived at the scene but by then, the man was already dead.”

It was learnt that some foreign passports were found inside the deceased’s vehicle, which made people to initially believe that he was a foreigner.

However, our correspondent who visited the scene on Saturday learnt that he was a Nigerian whose real name was Onyekachi Korie.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Friday that two policemen, Idu and Ameh, as well as a tout, Sunday Sylvester, had been arrested by the police and transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

A police source at SARS told our correspondent that the killer policemen had written confessional statements.

The source said, “The murder was a case of police extortion that went out of hand. However, there will be no cover up on the matter as we have arrested both killer policemen as well as those who have been engaging on illegal traffic duty.”

The police source told our correspondent that the suspects confessed that they usually engaged in illegal duty between 5am and 7am.

He said, “The police suspects said they usually seized commercial buses and then used it to extort money from people early in the morning before LASTMA men come for morning shifts. Sylvester also confessed that he had driven the policemen on over 10 illegal operations.

“He said after arresting traffic offenders, they would take them to a corner and negotiate a specific amount of money and then release them. He said offenders were never taken to LASTMA office because they would need to register the case and by so doing, they would not make any money.”

However, the police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, had said the killers might have been hired killers in police uniform. She, however, confirmed that arrests had been made.

Our correspondent, who visited the Area D Command on Saturday, saw the deceased’s vehicle with registration number, EH778FST on the premises.

... Nigeria's Economy Set To Overtake South-Africa's In Two Years...

Nigeria is likely to take South Africa’s position as the continent’s largest economy within two years, a Reuters poll found on Thursday. Nigeria’s gross domestic product will receive an enormous boost when it is rebased later this year to more accurately reflect changes in the economy over the last two decades. The GDP base in use is from 1990 and fails to capture the technology and telecoms sectors which have emerged since then. The much-delayed rebasing could add up to 50% to Nigeria’s economy, giving it a nominal GDP of around $375bn which is almost the size of South Africa’s.

Strong domestic demand and high levels of agriculture and services activity will see it clinch the title of Africa’s biggest economy within a couple years if current growth rates are maintained. High unemployment and a slowdown in the euro zone, South Africa’s main trading partner, make it vulnerable to losing its number one spot. It is set to grow at just 2.6% this year. It must be noted, however, that while being number one in the continent may boost Nigeria’s profile, South Africa still enjoys a better GDP-per-capita ratio compared to Nigeria, and therefore a slightly better standard of living.
