Goodluck Jonathan Appoints New Service Chiefs


After several weeks of speculation, President Goodluck Jonathan Thursday effect changes in the military high command with the appointment of    Vice Admiral O.S. Ibrahim as the Chief of Defense Staff. In a statement in Abuja, the Special Adviser to the president on Communications, Reuben Abati said the chief of Army  Lt.-Gen. O.A. Ihejirika  retains his position but the chiefs of Air and Naval Staff have been relieved of their appointments. The statement reads: “The president Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved the following appointments in the Armed Forces:
Chief of Defence Staff –    Vice Admiral O.S. Ibrahim (Kwara), Chief of Naval Staff,  Rear Admiral D.J. Ezeoba, Chief of Air Staff , Air Vice Marshall A.S. Badeh (Adamawa)
“The incumbent Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. O.A. Ihejirika  (Abia) retains his position.
“President Jonathan thanks the outgoing service chiefs for their meritorious and commendable service to the nation and wishes them well in their future endeavours.”

Reports just reaching Edeson Online NEWS DESK disclosed that 46yr-old renown boxer, Mike Tyson has undergone surgery in a bid to fix a degenerated disc. Supported by a neck brace with a visible scar on his neck, Tyson showed up at a charity auction held by the World Boxing Council and Hublot Watches in Las Vegas. Titanium pins were inserted to support his neck as a result of an old spinal injury which had been causing him pain. Tyson tweeted an explanation on Sunday, writing: “I was damaged before I even entered boxing.”

ABBA museum to open in Swedish capital in 2013

A museum devoted to pop supergroup ABBA will open next year in the Swedish capital aiming to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors, organizers said on Wednesday. The museum, a permanent exhibition within a hall of fame of Swedish pop music, will feature memorabilia like stage costumes worn by the singers. Visitors will also be able to sing along to ABBA songs alongside life size holograms of the group.

Deputy Governor Of Taraba State, Sani Danladi Abubakar has been Impeached

The deputy governor, Mr. Sani Danladi Abubakar had been accused of diverting a Millennium Development Goals project to his private school, Yagai Academy, which houses his other business ventures like Yagai Water, Yagai Printing Press and Yagai Restaurant, acts which the house of assembly described as “gross misconduct.” The house of assembly said locating the MDG ICT Centre and sinking motorised boreholes in Yagai Academy were unacceptable, as the school was his private venture and members of the public could not access them.

They also alleged that the deputy governor used his influence to acquire “a large expanse of land in Jalingo on which he built Yagai Academy (together with all other multi million naira business ventures sited therein like Yagai Water, Yagai Printing Press and Yagai Restaurant), an institution which is worth about N1 billion. The lawmakers said his total emoluments as a deputy governor could not justify such investments, adding that he had breached the code of conduct for public office-holders which requires that he shows transparency in the act of governance.

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is BANKRUPT

Information available to EDESON ONLINE NEWS revealed that Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is so broke that it may not be able to pay staff salaries from next month. Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, disclosed this to bewildered members of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, who visited INEC headquarters in Abuja, yesterday. Dr. Abdulkadir Sulaiman, who represented Prof. Jega, said: “If we don’t do anything about it on time, we may not be able to pay salary by next month.”

ABUJA—The Federal Executive Council Wednesday took a bold step towards immortalising the first president of Nigeria, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe as it approved N1,496 billion, for the building of a Mausoleum in his honour in Onitsha. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, who briefed newsmen after the meeting of the council yesterday said the  President had given his commitment during his visit to Anambra State that   the issue of the Mausoleum would be revisited. Cadbury has won a legal battle after Nestlé took the company to court, challenging an earlier ruling which gave the former company exclusive use of Pantone 2685C – the particular type of purple used in Dairy Milk packaging. Despite Nestle arguing that the colour should not be protected as a trade mark, the judge ruled that this particular shade had been linked to the chocolate bar for more than 90 years.

Intellectual property partner in DWF’s food group, Ed Meikle, said: “The importance of this decision for Cadburycannot be underestimated. Arguably, the colour is one of the chocolate manufacturer’s most important assets and as such, the company would undoubtedly have appealed the decision if it had lost.

Bulgarian writer, Miroslav Penkov wins BBC Short Story Award


Bulgarian author Miroslav Penkov has won the BBC International Short Story Award, for his entry East of the West. The winner was announced at a ceremony in London, broadcast live on Radio 4 arts show Front Row. Penkov takes the £15,000 prize, while the runner-up, South African writer Henrietta Rose-Innes, wins £2,500 for her story Sanctuary.  The BBC competition was opened out this year to include international writers, in honour of the London 2012 Games.The shortlist included stories from Deborah Levy, also shortlisted for this year's Man Booker prize; former winner Julian Gough; and Krys Lee, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, but brought up in the US. The judges said they were "unanimous" in their selection of Penkov's story, which is set during and after the Cold War in Bulgaria. According to organisers, East of the West "explores the difficulties of love, relationships and identity in a region
