First in The News Is A RECAP of Major events that occurred during the weekend::

1.            KEAGAN WINS BIG BROTHER AFRICA: 22 year old intern manager, Keagan  won the Big Brother Africa Stargame on Sunday. The South African won a mouth-watering sum of $300, 000, cash.

2.            USAIN BOLTS Rocks!: It was also reported that Jamaican athlete, Usain Bolt won the 100m men's final on Sunday, setting an Olympic record time of 9.63. Usain is actually the first sprinter to defend the 100m title on the track. Carl Lewis won in 1984 but got the 1988 gold after Ben Johnson was stripped of his title.

3.            NIGERIAN FOOTBALLER DIE IN ROMANIA: Sadly, A 21-year old Nigerian football player, Henry Chinonso Ihelewere, died during a football match in Romania on Sunday. Ihelewere, who was playing for CS Delta Tulcea against local team FC BaloteÈ™ti, collapsed 15 minutes after coming onto the pitch. The ambulance was called and doctors tried to resuscitate him for around half an hour. The striker had been playing in the Balkan country since 2007 when he joined Farul Constanta.

4.            Famous Nigerian musician, Faze is set to release his new album titled ‘Refazed’ tomorrow 8th August 2012. The album is a brilliant fusion of R & B, Reggae, Pop, Afro Pop, Dancehall and Ragga with an interesting African undertone. Some of the singles off the album – Am in the mood, Nkem, Akachukwu and Follow your mind are already getting heavy airplay across Africa and the rest of the world.

5.            According to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities carried out in July, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been placed first in Nigeria and 31st in Africa. The ranking was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Mr Harris Osarenre, and made available on Saturday in Benin.

6.         Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has approved the appointment of Prof. Ganiyu Olatunde as Acting VC of Osun State University, Osogbo.


7.         TEJU BABYFACE to MARRY: It has been confirmed that Comedian and TV host, Olateju Oyelakin, popularly known as Tejubabyface will wed top model and former beauty queen, Tobi Banjoko on Saturday 1st of September 2012 at the Chapel of Light Interdenominational, Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja. Reception is at The Muson Centre in Onikan. There traditional wedding will hold on Thursday, 30 August 2012, at 10 Degrees Event Centre, Billings Way, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.

8.         As the world Breastfeeding week comes to an end with the Theme ‘Learning from the past to improve the future, strengthening the first 1000 days’, several activities of sensitizing mothers especially from rural areas on breast feeding  their children have been conducted. The world breast feeding week is marked every  first week of August, with the aim of advocating  for  increased awareness  on interventions that promote, support and protect appropriate infant  and Young Child Feeding. However, Mothers have been Advised to Breastfeed their Babies till 3years.

9.         Sources say Alapomeji star 9ice has left the shores of Naija accompanied by Nollywood Yoruba actress Laide Bakare as the later get set to premiere her much hyped movie ‘Jejere’ in the United Kingdom.  The premiere will be followed by a world tour as the lady plans to take the movie to other parts of the world. 9ice it would be recalled played the lead role in the movie which critics say may help reposition the career of the singer.‘Jejere” according to the producer, Bakare, ‘Jejere’ tells the story and corrects the general belief of segregating the female child, particularly in the African setting. The movie also teaches different lessons about the human race and inter-relations among people of different race.

10.     David Mark Denies Calling For Social Media Censorship:  Senate President, Senator David Mark, was last week quoted by a newspaper asking for a clampdown on social media, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders. Now the Senate President is saying he was misquoted.
